CEDAR FALLS, Iowa Parker J. Palmer, cited as one of the 30 most influential senior leaders in higher education and one of the 10 key agenda-setters of the past decade, will speak on the University of Northern Iowa campus Wednesday, Sept. 20.
Palmer, whose visit is sponsored by UNI's Center for the Enhancement of Teaching, is presenting a number of sessions throughout the day around the theme Building a Holistic Teaching Community. He will deliver his keynote address, which is open to the public free of charge, at 4:30 p.m. in the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center's Great Hall. His topic will be Honor Thy Teacher: Educational Reform from the Inside Out. A reception will follow.
Two additional presentations will be open to the public. At 9 a.m., Palmer will conduct a one-hour discussion class on his main topic. Then, at 11 a.m., he will lead a session on social justice in teaching. Both events will be held at the Maucker Union Expansion A & B.
Palmer is a teacher, writer and activist, who works independently on issues in education, community, leadership, spirituality and social change. He serves as senior associate of the American Association of Higher Education, senior advisor to the Fetzer Institute, and as founder of Fetzer's Teacher Formation Program for K-12 teachers across the country.
