Maya Angelou tickets no longer available

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Tickets for the Sept. 11 performance by Maya Angelou at the University of Northern Iowa are no longer available. According to Guy Sims, assistant director of Student Activities at UNI, an “exuberant student body claimed all the tickets during the first two days of availability.”

Because Angelou's performance is funded through student activity fees, initial availability went to students. The university offered the free tickets to students Aug. 28-29, and had planned to offer them to the public Aug. 30.

University of Northern Iowa staff members honored with 2000 Regents Staff Excellence Awards

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa —Three University of Northern Iowa Professional and Scientific staff members were honored this summer by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, with 2000 Regents Staff Excellence Awards.

Recipients were: Karen Agee, reading/learning strategies coordinator, Academic Advising Services; Carol Geiger, administrative assistant, Office of the Vie President for Educational and Student Services; and Jane Larson, administrative assistant, Office of the Executive Assistant to the President/Director of External Relations.

The awards are presented annually to P&S staff members and biennially to a member of the supervisory/confidential exempt merit employees group, who have made outstanding professional contributions to UNI during their careers. Candidates are nominated by their colleagues and peers.

Agee has served UNI for 16 years, the last 10 in her current position. She has been active in professional organizations and on-campus committees and currently serves on the University Accreditation Review Committee for the North Central Association Accreditation.

Agee was the 1998 recipient of the Sue Follon Exemplary Service Award given by colleagues for quality, integrity, leadership services, teamwork and caring demonstrated in her work with students, faculty and staff.

Geiger joined the UNI staff in 1985 and has been in her current position since 1991. Her nominator wrote she “exemplifies excellence in everything she does. Her organizational skills and attention to detail are evident as she leads the division's annual awards luncheon, coordinates the Sue Follon Exemplary Service Award and works with the Presidential Scholars selection committee and academic leadership to bring students to campus who are ultimately selected for this prestigious award.”

Larson has served UNI since 1982, and previously worked 10 years for the University of Iowa and one year at Iowa State University. Her nominator wrote she exemplifies excellence in all endeavors and has been a vital force in the work of her offices. “In every way, she has contributed to the success of the university in realizing its mission and achieving its strategic plan. Her positive outlook, thoughtfulness, and attention to detail improve the quality of work of all of those she serves.”
