UNI Gallery of Art to present "Joyce J. Scott Journeys"

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa Gallery of Art will present an exhibition of sculptures and prints, "Joyce J. Scott Journeys" Aug. 27 — Sept. 21. The artist, Joyce J. Scott, will present a lecture at 6 p.m., Aug. 27. in Room 111 of the Kamerick Art Building. This event will be followed by a reception from 7-8 p.m.

Scott was born and reared in Baltimore. Her mother is the renowned fiber artist, Elizabeth Talford Scott.

Scott received her B.F.A. degree from Maryland Institute, College of Art and a M.F.A. in crafts from Institute Allende in Mexico.

Scott exhibits, performs, and lectures nationally and internationally and is the recipient of numerous honors from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, and the American Craft Council. In 2000, the Baltimore Museum of Art staged a major retrospective of her work titled, "Joyce J. Scott: Kickin' It with the Old Masters."

The exhibition is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday; Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. The gallery is located at the corner of Hudson Road and West 27th street in Cedar Falls on the main floor of the Kamerick Art Building. UNI Gallery of Art to present "Modern Design Icons: 20th Century Graphic, Industrial and Architectural Design"

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa Gallery of Art will present "Modern Design Icons: 20th Century Graphic, Industrial and Architectural Design" Aug. 27 — Sept. 21. The exhibit features well-known classic objects from design history on loan from the artist, collectors in the Cedar Falls/Waterloo community, and the UNI Permanent Collection.

The exhibition is free and open to the public. Pease named senior enlisted adviser for UNI

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Master Sgt. Peter J. Pease has been named ROTC senior enlisted adviser for the University of Northern Iowa's U.S. Army ROTC cadet battalion.

Pease earned a bachelor's degree in Health Science from Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C., and is pursuing a master's degree in Business and Organizational Security Management at Webster University in St. Louis.

Pease joined the Army in 1982 where he served as an infantryman and sniper with the 82nd Airborne Division. He re-enlisted in 1986 for special forces training and has subsequently served in a variety of Special Operations assignments. Most recently Pease was assigned to the United States Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) where he served as Operations Sergeant.

He has received numerous awards and commendations, including the Bronze Star Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Liberation of Kuwait Medal, French Forces Moniteur Commando Badge and the Egyptian and Tunisian Parachutist Wings.

UNI cheer and dance squads bring home national awards

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa cheer squad brought home the coveted leadership trophy after competing in the nation's largest college spirit camp, hosted by the Universal Cheer and Dance Association (UCA/UDA) in Milwaukee. The team also received second-place honors in both the cheer competition and the camp sideline competition.

The UNI dance team received a third-place trophy in the home routine competition and also was awarded the Program Improvement trophy.

UCA/UDA College Spirit camp is an annual event hosted by the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee with nearly 1,500 cheerleaders and dancers competing for a series of awards.

UNI sponsors annual Welcome Week

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa will host its annual Welcome Week, Sat., Aug. 25 through Friday, Aug. 31. This first week of school is packed with activities designed to welcome new and returning students to UNI.

Some of the events taking place across campus include a rooftop barbecue, performances by a hypnotist, block party, New Student Bash and a drive-in movie.
