Champion of justice to speak at convocation

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Morris Dees, chief trial counsel and co-founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center, has been selected as the keynote speaker for the University of Northern Iowa's 2001 convocation, 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 29, in the UNI-Dome.

Dees will deliver a speech titled "Responding to Hate: Voices of Hope and Tolerance." The Southern Poverty Law Center is a non-profit group that specializes in lawsuits involving civil rights violations and racially motivated crimes.

UNI to host gender violence prevention forum

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa's Department of Communication Studies will present "Hookin' Up At UNI: A Gender Violence Prevention Forum." Workshops included in this forum are part of a $500,000 U.S. Department of Justice grant awarded to combat violent crimes against women on campus.

Five one-hour workshops will be presented to all new students during the orientation weekend prior to the start of the fall semester.
