CEDAR FALLS, Iowa The University of Northern Iowa (UNI) Gallery of Art will present Damp Edge, a collaboration of prints by artists Pam Longobardi and Craig Dongoski Aug. 21 to Sept. 14. These works are the result of a dual artist residency fellowship at the Franz Masereel Centrum in Kasterlee, Belgium.
Two photographic images were juxtaposed, scanned, and with no further computer manipulation, printed out as large-scale (36-inch by 47inch) Iris prints. These were the raw starting points for the hand-manipulation that was done in the two-and-a-half week residency in Belgium. Most of the treatment was done with water-based screen inks, raw pigment and hand painting.
According to Rachel Flint, acting director of the UNI Gallery of Art, what seemed to emerge in this phase, was a union of the visual dualities represented in the images, and thus, presented itself as the classic moral dilemma of vice/virtue, as depicted in the series Seven Cardinal Virtues/Seven Deadly Sins.
Special events scheduled for the exhibit include a lecture by both artists at 2 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 27 in the Art Auditorium of UNI's Kamerick Art Building, with a reception to immediately follow. The artists will be visiting UNI art classes August 28 and 29 to conduct workshops and further discuss their work.
Both the exhibition and lecture at the UNI Gallery of Art are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday; Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. The Gallery is located at the corner of Hudson Road and West 27th street in Cedar Falls on the main floor of the Kamerick Art Building.
