UNI Global Health Corps conducts mission in Mexico
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa Global Health Corps recently traveled to Cuernavaca, Mexico to serve nearly 400 people.
The corps, under the leadership of Dick Miller and Linda Miller, mission leader, presented dental health and hygiene programs to children and families in several clinics and hospitals. Hypertension screenings and education were provided to adults in small villages and downtown Cuernavaca. Also shared was information on nutrition, exercise, breastfeeding benefits and lead paint.
The group had daily Spanish lessons to assist in communicating, and visited several historical sites to better understand the culture.
Students participating in the mission were Francesca Hanson, junior, from Ottumwa; Israel Msengi, graduate student, from Cedar Falls; Carolyn Strubel, graduate student, from Waterloo; and Tara Ficek, graduate student in the UCLA masters' program for public health, from Cedar Falls.
This was the second trip that the Millers have led to Cuernavaca, and the fourth Global Health Corps international mission.
