Note to editors: MTBE is a gasoline additive produced from fossil fuels that helps reduce carbon monoxide emissions from automobiles. Ethanol, derived from corn, serves the same purpose. Gasoline that contains ethanol is called gasohol. Gasoline that contains MTBE is called oxygenated gasoline.

National faculty development workshop at UNI takes on MTBE debate

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The recent controversy surrounding the use of oxygenated fuels such as ethanol and MTBE to reduce carbon monoxide air pollution were the focus of a workshop recently held on the University of Northern Iowa campus.

Some 20 high school and community college faculty from around the nation attended UNI's seventh annual faculty development workshop for the Advanced Technology Environmental Education Center (ATEEC). ATEEC is partially funded by the National Science Foundation.

"These ATEEC Fellows are excellent teachers but need accurate and timely information about complex environmental issues," said Ed Brown, director of environmental programs at UNI and lead instructor for the workshop. Brown is also co-principal investigator of ATEEC.

UNI Department of Chemistry announces annual awards and honors

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa Department of Chemistry cited students for awards and honors at its annual spring banquet. Twenty different awards and honors were presented by Duane Bartak, department head and professor of chemistry.

Senior Kelly Boss, from Charles City, received the Student First award and McKay Study Abroad Scholarship. Diana Franck, senior from Denison, received the Dean's Student award, the Purple and Old Gold Award, the American Institute of Chemists Award, and her name was added to the honor roll of chemistry seniors.

Sophomore Michelle Montgomery, from Sioux City, and senior Jared Johnson, from Reinbeck, received the C.W. Lantz Scholarship. Lisa Laughery, junior from Guthrie Center, was awarded the Louis Bageman Memorial Scholarship and was named the outstanding physical chemistry student.

Junior Diane Moller, from Oskaloosa, and junior Joseph Yankey, from Mason City, received the Louis Bageman Memorial Scholarship. Sophomore Jonathan Eastman received the Polymer Chemistry Division award in Organic Chemistry 2000 and was named the outstanding organic chemistry student. Eastman and Laura Robinson, sophomore from West Des Moines, both were awarded the Kercheval Scholarship.

Sara Urbas, senior from Ballwin, Mo., received the Robert W. Getchell Memorial Scholarship and was added to the honor roll of chemistry seniors. Shane Rassman sophomore from Forest City, and Christopher Hartman, sophomore from Sioux City, were awarded the Chemistry Faculty Scholarship. Sophomore Jenna Harang, from Denver, and freshman Nitasha Fish, from Marion, were awarded the Leland Wilson scholarship.

Nolan Mente, from Tipton, received the freshman chemistry award. Senior Mary Smalley, from Riceville, was awarded the American Institute of Chemistry Award in Analytical Chemistry and was named the outstanding inorganic chemistry student. Senior Jennifer Miller, from Grandview, received the Hypercube award.

Graduate Student Caroline Stammeyer, from Lawler, received the outstanding teaching award. Senior Jill Humston, from Iowa City, was named outstanding physical chemistry student and she was a new member on the honor roll of chemistry seniors. Senior Sarah Ferguson, from West Des Moines, received the chemistry scholarship and service award.

Seniors Michael Roth, from Council Bluffs, Maggie Nelson, from Algona, Brett Post, from Rock Valley, Adam Burstkern, from Evansdale, Becky Kobliska, from Alta Vista, and Erin McNaughton, from Chariton, all were added to the honor roll of chemistry seniors.
