Walk UNI kicks off summer portion of 125th anniversary

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- As part of its ongoing 125th anniversary celebration, the University of Northern Iowa will sponsor the first-ever Walk UNI, a self-guided walking tour of campus, Sat., July 21, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event takes place in conjunction with the annual College Hill Arts Festival. The event, which also will feature prizes, refreshments and family activities, is for the public and is free of charge.

Two separate routes, one gold and one purple, will take participants through specific buildings, for a chance to observe the university's growth over the past 125 years. Those taking the purple route will visit the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center (GBPAC), Seerley Hall's Great Reading Room, the Biology Botanical Center, Lang Hall, the Marshall Center School, the Wellness Recreation Center (WRC), the Gallery of Art, Strayer-Wood Theatre, and the newly remodeled Redeker Dining Center.

The gold route features tours through those same buildings, and also includes the Center for Energy and Environmental Education (CEEE), and the UNI Museum.

Participants should check in at the GBPAC, any time between 9 a.m and noon, to pick up a map and register for prizes.

The university is providing free rides to campus, via the Metropolitan Transit Authority, Fri., July 20 and Sat., July 21. Buses will run regular hours on July 20, 5:45 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., making stops near UNI's Ethnic Minorities Cultural and Educational Center (EMCEC) every half hour. On July 20, the bus will run from 9:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., with stops every half hour. The July 21 run will include stops at the GBPAC for the Walk UNI event.

UNI to host the Iowa Prairie Conference

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The Native Roadside Vegetation Center will host its 2001 Prairie Conference, "The Prairie Puzzle," Sat., July 21, at the University of Northern Iowa's Center for Energy and Environmental Education (CEEE).

Kirk Henderson, manager of UNI's Roadside Office, said the conference will educate attendees on the components and structure of prairie systems. "Less than 0.1 percent of native Iowa prairie remains as scattered remnants, leaving citizens to reconstruct the pieces of the puzzle for the Iowa Prairie," he said.

Conference Topics will include the history of bison and elk, germination of prairie cordgrass, and how to starting a native seed business. Also featured will be field trips to the campus prairie, CEEE prairie planting and Native Roadside Vegetation Center. UNI presenters include Greg Housel, plant materials specialist; Wade Williams, program assistant; and Henderson.

The conference will run from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m, at the Center for Energy and Environmental Education. Registration is $40; $20 for students. For more information, call Linda Love, 319-273-6855 or 800-782-9519.

UNI's Maucker Union announces change in hours

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa 's J.W. Maucker Union will have new summer hours effective Monday, July 16.

The Union will be open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and closed Saturday and Sunday. It previously was open until 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Also changing are the hours for the game room and Blimpie Subs & Salads. The game room will be open Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Blimpie's will be open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Other areas in the Union will operate on their original summer hours. Union Station will be open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Freshens / Seattle's Best Coffee will be open Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. The information desk is closed during the summer session and the computer center is closed until August 10.
