UNI center tackles landfill/recycling issues
According to numbers released by the Waste Management Assistance Bureau, only three of the state's 46 regional waste areas have met the Legislature's goal to cut landfill volumes in half by the year 2000. Susan Salterberg, program manager for UNI's Center for Energy and Environmental Education, said we'd have better success if we focused more on waste prevention. The CEEE offers programs that educate users about ways to reduce, reuse and recycle waste.
"The good news is that, in the last 40 years, recycling rates have escalated seven-fold," Salterberg explained. "Yet, even with this tremendous increase in recycling and composting, Americans still discard substantially more than they did in 1960. Therefore, because waste generation continues to rise, the need for waste reduction is essential. Unfortunately, we've focused largely on recycling, turning the 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle' waste hierarchy upside down."
