UNI-Dome to close for construction spring and summer 2002
CEDAR FALLS -- The University of Northern Iowa announced today that it will take more than one construction season to complete repair and improvements to the UNI-Dome. While the facility is expected to reopen in time for UNI's first home football game on Aug. 30, the university will close the facility again from March 22 until August 2002 to complete construction.
UNI-Dome staff is working with on- and off-campus groups to make necessary arrangements.
Built in 1976, the UNI-Dome was one of the first air-supported structures of its size in the Midwest. The facility's original fabric roof collapsed in December 1994. In 1998, it became the first facility of its type to be converted to a steel-supported metal-and-fabric roof.
In July 2000, UNI filed a lawsuit in Black Hawk County District Court against three companies in conjunction with the replacement of that roof. The university alleges a number of defects in the project, including roof leaks; warping and twisting of the roof structure; improper design and construction of the roofs steel support structure; the need for modifications to the existing structure in order to withstand the weight of the new roof; improper construction of the sports floor; and improper design and construction of the mechanical systems, electrical systems, sound system and metal and fabric roof. The suit is still pending.

News Brief

UNI's student newspaper's 100 year history to be preserved
A piece of the University's history will be preserved through a Historic Resources Development Program (HRDP) grant funded through the State Historical Society of Iowa. The grant will make possible digitizing (creation of a computerized scanned version), microfilming and reprinting onto acid-free paper of additional issues of the student newspaper, now known as the Northern Iowan. The newspaper was published from 1878 to 1884, and has been published continuously since1892.
Gerald Peterson, special collections librarian and university archivist, applied for the grant whose funds come from Resource Enhancement and Protection monies. The new grant will allow for preservation of issues from 1878 to 1884, and from 1900 to 1914. Peterson has previously preserved issues from 1892-1900 and 1994-99.
The Iowa State Historical Society Board of Trustees approved funding for 44 projects totaling $413,115 in grants, from the 121 applications received this year. Grant categories include historic properties, museums, documentary collections and country schools. All projects are required to have matching funds.
Area legislators will be on hand to present the ceremonial check, along with Peterson and Library Interim Dean Marilyn Mercado. The ceremony will take place on the third floor of Rod Library in Special Collections. Mercado may be reached at (319) 273-2737 and Peterson at (319) 273-6307.
