UNI Department of Political Science awards scholarships

CEDAR FALLS - - The University of Northern Iowa Department of Political Science recently awarded scholarships to seven students.

The Black Hawk County Bar Association Scholarship was awarded to three students. Laura E. Stockel, a senior political science major from Dubuque, was the recipient of a $500 scholarship. Joseph M. Earle, a sophomore political science major from Grundy Center, was the recipient of a $250 scholarship. Howard E. Zimmerle, a junior political science major from Fort Dodge, was the recipient of a $250 scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to academically outstanding juniors or seniors majoring in political science, political communication or public administration who have made a commitment to attend law school.

The Glasener Political Science Scholarship was awarded to two students. Adam L. Briddell, a junior Political Science major from West Des Moines, received a $500 scholarship. Valerie K. Jennings, a senior majoring in political communication from Solon, was the recipient of a $500 scholarship. The $500 scholarship is awarded to outstanding political science majors each year.

Chris W. Larimer, a senior political science major from Oelwein, was the recipient of the Dennis Jensen Memorial Scholarship. The $600 scholarship is awarded to an Iowa resident who is a political science or public administration major who has completed an internship in state or local government, and has a GPA of at least 3.25.

Emma J. Kreis, a junior political science major from Waterloo, was the recipient of the Charles Ray and Ada May Hoxie scholarship. This $1,000 scholarship is awarded to a sophomore or junior majoring in political science with a GPA of at least 3.30.

Local students named to UNI summer orientation staff

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Eighteen students at the University of Northern Iowa will spend a portion of their summer welcoming entering freshmen, and their parents, to UNI's summer orientation.

The students were selected from 60 applicants according to Jon Buse, UNI senior admissions counselor. Guidelines for selection were interpersonal skills, involvement in campus activities and organizations, academic achievement, knowledge of the university, and sensitivity to the concerns of the new students and their parents.

The summer orientation program advisors are Derek M. Thoms, a senior economics major from Mason City, and Matt Bunker, an organizational communications major from Des Moines. They will work with the prospective students' parents during the two-day orientation program.

UNI's Summer Orientation will be held in 10 sessions during June and July, with about 2,000 students expected to attend. The dates are: June 4-5, 6-7, 11-12, 14-15, 18-19, 21-22, 25-26 and 28-29, and July 2-3 and 5-6.

During the sessions, students and parents will attend presentations addressing different aspects of college life. Students also will meet with their academic advisors, register for fall semester classes and explore the new Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center. Parents are invited to attend sessions that explain residence hall living, financial aid, academic advising and class scheduling. They also will have the opportunity to visit with UNI faculty and tour the campus.
