UNI Department of Economics awards scholarships

CEDAR FALLS -- The University of Northern Iowa Department of Economics recently awarded scholarships to seven students. The scholarships are awarded annually to selected economics majors. Applications are judged on the basis of scholarly ability, need and attitude.

Josh Lens, a junior economics major from Burlington, was the recipient of the Glasener scholarship. The $600 scholarship was established in 1987 by the estate of F. Russell Glasener.

Emily Hepker, a junior economics major with a quantitative emphasis from Cedar Rapids, was awarded the Leavitt Scholarship. The $750 scholarship began in 1970 in memory of Charles T. Leavitt, a professor of economics at UNI.

Alex Knight, a senior economics and sociology major from Cedar Rapids, was awarded the Emeritus Faculty Scholarship. This is the first year the $400 scholarship was awarded.

Beth Gansen, a junior economics and political science major from Clinton, was the recipient of the Alumni Scholarship. The $600 scholarship was first awarded in 2000.

Megan Swanson, a junior economics major from Ogden, was awarded the Mahmood Yousefi Scholarship. The $1,000 scholarship started in 2001 in memory of Mahmood Yousefi, an economics professor at UNI.

Ryan Murphy, a junior economics major with a Community Economics Development (CED) emphasis, from Perry, was the recipient of the Alliant Energy Scholarship. The $1,500 scholarship is awarded annually.

Christopher Lockie, a junior economics major with a CED emphasis from Riceville, was awarded the Gov. Terry E. Branstad Scholarship. The $1,500 scholarship is awarded annually.

UNI chapter of American Marketing Association names new leaders

CEDAR FALLS -- The University of Northern Iowa collegiate chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA) has elected new officers for 2001-2002.

George Lewis, a senior marketing major from Bettendorf, continues as president. Nicole Thuente, a junior marketing major from Fort Atkinson, was named vice president of operations. Nikki Kleve, a senior marketing major from Calmar, was elected vice president of human relations. Julie Oakland, a senior marketing major from Ossian, was named vice president of finance. Nick Pfeiffer, a junior public relations major from Washington, was elected vice president of fundraising. Kathy Roling, a junior management information systems major from Eldridge, was named vice president of communications. K.N. Rajendran, associate professor of marketing, is the faculty advisor for the chapter.

The UNI AMA chapter created a scholarship fund during the 1999-2000 academic year that allows up to two students to receive $500 each during an academic year. To be eligible for the award a student must be at least of junior standing, be a declared marketing major or a member of the AMA for at least one academic year, and have a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or better. Additionally, the applicant has to write a brief essay demonstrating their leadership abilities. The first award was made during the 2000-2001 academic year. This year's recipient is Kathy Roling, vice president of communications for the UNI chapter.

UNI Public Relations Student Society of America members elected to national offices

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Three members of the University of Northern Iowa Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) were elected to national offices at the PRSSA National Assembly held in New Orleans earlier this spring.

Dirk Munson, junior public relations major from Cedar Falls, was elected national PRSSA president, marking the first time the state of Iowa has had a national PRSSA president. Mike McGill, senior public relations major from Independence, was elected vice president of member services; and Sergei Golitsinski, graduate student in public relations from St. Petersburg, Russia, was elected to a second term as Web master.

This also is the first time the UNI PRSSA chapter has had three members on the national board at the same time, according to Gayle Pohl, chapter advisor and UNI associate professor of public relations.

UNI ROTC recognizes local veteran

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa’s Department of Military Science recently awarded Jon Hall, of Veralta Drive, Cedar Falls, the "Commander’s Award for Civilian Service," for his support and promotion of UNI's Army ROTC program. Hall, a decorated combat veteran, served with the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam from 1970 to1971. Hall is the State of Iowa AMVET representative for ROTC's in the state of Iowa and is an active member of AMVET Post #49 in Cedar Falls.
