UNI and Cedar Falls energy conservation lauded by U.S. mayors
CEDAR FALLS -- The city of Cedar Falls will be recognized for its Conservation City program during the May 29-30 U.S. Department of Energy's National Mayors Energy Summit in Chicago.
Conservation City is a partnership between the University of Northern Iowa's Center for Energy and Environmental Education (CEEE), Cedar Falls Utilities and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Rebuild Iowa program. The program was selected as the best example of "what a city can do to decrease energy consumption and educate citizens about the benefits of energy efficiency."
Since Conservation City began in January 1998, more than $1 million worth of energy-saving improvements have been made to commercial, public and residential facilities, according to Elizabeth Plasket, energy educator at the CEEE and coordinator of the program.
As part of the program, UNI students perform energy audits on area homes and make presentations about energy conservation and renewable energy at Cedar Falls elementary and middle schools.
Program administrators are hoping to stimulate economic development through opportunities for local retailers, financiers and contractors to participate in energy efficiency projects. A low-interest loan program has been established for residential and commercial projects.
Under the direction of Mayor Jon Crews, the city of Cedar Falls is developing a comprehensive strategic plan for the next decade, which will emphasize local energy use and sustainability.
