Southern Poverty Law Center founder to speak at UNI convocation

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Morris Dees, chief trial counsel and co-founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center, will be the keynote speaker for the University of Northern Iowa's convocation, at 3:30 p.m., Wed., Aug. 29, in the UNI-Dome.

Dees has championed a series of landmark civil rights lawsuits that have bankrupted the Ku Klux Klan and increased awareness of radical militias.

The public may attend the convocation at no charge.

Heartland Suzuki Institute to be held at UNI

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa Suzuki School is offering the Heartland Suzuki Institute (HSI) June 10-15.

HSI provides teaching, discussions and question/answer periods for teachers, parents and students. The selection of classes includes the traditional Suzuki master classes, repertoire classes, orchestra and reading classes, recitals, performances, and enrichment activities from the performing and visual arts.

HSI also will include the Kinder Klari clarinet program, appropriate for beginning through advanced students. The schedule includes a private lesson, a repertoire class, a music history/theory class, recitals, performances and enrichment activities. Children who have not previously played the clarinet may enroll.

The HSI teacher enrichment program will feature Michelle George, violin instructor and Suzuki teacher trainer from Cleveland Institute, who will discuss, "Teaching Group Classes: Effective Strategies and Techniques."

The HSI student program is for Suzuki violin, viola, cello and bass students and begins Sun., June 10. Parents are expected to attend all sessions with their students. There also will be daily sessions solely for parents.

A jazz string workshop is Sat., June 16, and is open to violin, viola, cello and bass students 12 and older, or who are at Suzuki Book 4 level or equivalent. Instructor will be Randy Sabien, a jazz violinist who has performed in venues such as Austin City Limits, The Bop Shop and Café Carpe.

The HSI teacher enrichment course cost is $195, plus an SAA mandatory registration fee of $3. The observation fee is $50. The string institute fee is $250 for Book 5 and below, and $275 for Book 5 and above. There is an SAA mandatory registration fee of $2. The sibling enrichment course fee is $25. The Kinder Klari clarinet program is $225. The sibling enrichment course fee is $25. The jazz string workshop is $30 for HSI participants, and $50 for non-institute participants. The fee is $10 for "first hour only" participants.

All-sports camps offered at UNI

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa is offering all-sports camps in June for boys and girls 7-13 years of age. The boys' camp is June 17-21 and the girls' camp is June 24-28.

The camp for boys will feature baseball, basketball, football, rugby, soccer, swimming, track and field, and wrestling. The camp for girls will feature basketball, cheerleading, rugby, soccer, softball, swimming, track and field, and volleyball. Bowling, miniature golf, roller skating, and swimming will be among the evening activities.

The resident fee is $240. The commuter-plus fee is $200 and includes noon and evening meals and evening activities. The basic commuter fee is $165 and includes noon meals.

All UNI sports camps require a non-refundable deposit.

UNI chapter of Phi Beta Lambda receives awards at state conference

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa chapter of Phi Beta Lambda recently sent delegates to the 55th annual Iowa Phi Beta Lambda State Leadership Conference.

Phi Beta Lambda is the college-level organization of the Future Leaders of America Association and is a professional organization for majors and minors in business. The conference competition requires participants to answer questions about the field, and complete a job application process.

Melissa Hood of Rutland, senior and vice president of the UNI chapter, received first place in International Business and fourth place in Economics. Brandy Hunold of West Point, freshman, received fourth place in Payroll Accounting.

UNI received recognition for having the largest increase in local chapter.

Hood and Hunold were chosen to represent Iowa at the National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida in July. Hood, however, is participating in the UNI Camp Adventure program this summer and is unable to attend the national conference.
