Camp Adventure counselors from across U.S. to start management training at UNI today

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – More than 120 veteran Camp Adventure Youth Services counselors from more than 25 universities and colleges across the country will undergo intensive training at the University of Northern Iowa to become Camp Adventure program directors and project coordinators May 18-22. Camp Adventure is headquartered at UNI.

The staff development program kicks off at 10 a.m. Thursday and runs through noon on Monday. Along with program management training, students also will see presentations by the directors of the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force Morale, Welfare and Recreation Services programs in Europe; National School-age Care Alliance; and the National Program for Playground Safety, also headquartered at UNI.

“Our goal is to train our best Camp Adventure counselors to take on a management role,” said Christopher Edginton, head of the UNI School of Health, Physical Education and Leisure Services, and founder of Camp Adventure Youth Services. “Project coordinators are in charge of regions, which may contain 20 to 40 Camp Adventure counselors. Program directors are in charge at the location level and supervise from two to 20 camp counselors.”

“Camp Adventure program directors are typically college juniors and seniors and must have at least one year of Camp Adventure counseling experience,” said Stacy Van Gorp, UNI Health, Physical Education and Leisure Services instructor and Camp Adventure directors' training facilitator. “Each of these students has been identified as someone that exhibits high quality leadership and management potential. They're the best of the best.”

“Research shows that relocation stress is one of the biggest problems facing children of military parents overseas,” said Edginton. “Camp Adventure operates throughout the world and helps provide children and youth with continuity. It's something they look forward to every summer, even though they may be located in a different country than the year before.”

More than 750 college and university students will participate in Camp Adventure this summer. The program offers students the opportunity to travel around the world providing summer recreation programs for family members, especially children and youth, at U.S. military installations, U.S. Embassies, corporate clubs, international schools and in special programs. Students will serve all four branches of the U.S. military at more than 100 program sites worldwide.

Camp Adventure serves more than 10,000 children and youth daily – more than 500,000 annually – through a variety of high-quality, high-impact programs, including day-long, sports, resident, spirit, art, dance, computer and adventure challenge camps, aquatic services and teen programs.

Edginton established the program and brought it with him when he came to UNI in July of 1991. The program has generated more than $22 million in revenue since its inception ($21 million since relocation to UNI). Camp Adventure anticipates contracts totaling $3.5 million this year.

UNI College of Business Administration reaccredited for 10 years

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The College of Business Administration at the University of Northern Iowa has been reaccredited for 10 years for its baccalaureate and master's degree programs in business by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the International Association for Management Education.

"This reaffirmation of accreditation represents a 10-year renewal of the AACSB stamp of approval we first earned in 1993,” said Willis Greer, dean of the UNI College of Business Administration. Greer said the 10-year accreditation of UNI's programs is the maximum length of time for such approval.

“Nationwide, there are over 1,200 college and university programs in business administration,” he said. "Only 340 are AACSB accredited. Naturally, we are very pleased to be identified as `one of the best,' but the most valuable part of accreditation is that it always challenges us to seek continuous improvement. The fact that we do is a real credit to our faculty, our students and the people of Iowa."

A peer review was conducted by the organization's Business Accreditation Committee and ratified earlier this spring by the AACSB board of directors. The team report commended the College on its “relatively new building that provides an excellent learning environment with state-of-the-art technology for its classrooms and faculty offices.”

Also cited as strengths were: 1) the faculty's commitment to the students; 2) the involvement of the business community in curriculum and program development; 3) the emphasis on experiential learning that enables students to enhance their classroom knowledge with their experiences in an external problem-solving environment; and 4) an external services unit that enhances the College's reputation in the area and provides opportunities for faculty to dialog with alumni and employers.

“I'm extremely proud of our College of Business Administration,” said Aaron Podolefsky, UNI provost and vice president for academic affairs, “and pleased that our programs were reaccredited for 10 years. We had no deficiencies to make up. I was confident that this would be the case, because I am well aware of the high quality of our College of Business Administration.”

Iowa State Teachers College class of 1950 celebrates its Golden Class Reunion” at the University of Northern Iowa

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa —The University of Northern Iowa Class of 1950 celebrated its “Golden Reunion” on the Cedar Falls campus during commencement weekend, Thursday, May 4-Saturday, May 6, with close to 90 class members and a number of their spouses returning from all parts of the country.

Attending the festivities were __(Name)__ of __(Hometown)__.

The weekend, which was sponsored by the University of Northern Iowa Alumni Association and the Office of Alumni Relations, began with an early evening reception at the home of President and Mrs. Robert Koob for those arriving Thursday. It continued with a full schedule on Friday, beginning with a breakfast also attended by emeritus faculty and Student Alumni Ambassadors.

An update on the class gift project was presented by Lee Smalley, Menomenie, Wisc., class of 1950 reunion chair. The class raised $57,000, toward the restoration of Lang Hall on the campus of UNI, exceeding its original goal of $50,000.

Following a class picture and campus tour, members attended a noon luncheon where they were presented their 50-year pins and certificates and inducted into the “50-Year Club” by Dr. Bill Waack, class of 1949. At the “Golden Reunion Dinner” that evening, the class gift was formally presented.

Members of the honor class participated, in their caps and gowns, in Saturday's (May 6) commencement exercises in the UNI-Dome, concluding their formal activities.
