UNI to offer premier Jazz Combo Camp

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa will offer a new Jazz Combo Camp, June 24-29, for students and educators. The camp curriculum will include two daily combo rehearsals, instrumental master classes, theory improvisation, and ear training transcription.

The camp facilitators are Christopher Merz, UNI assistant professor of music, saxophone; Brent Sandy, freelance musician from Iowa City and trumpet player in the Alto Maiz salsa band; Rich Medd, band director, Iowa City West High School, trombone player in Alto Maiz; Bob Dunn, UNI adjunct professor and guitar player; Robert Washut, director, UNI Jazz Studies and piano player; Jonathan Schwabe, professor of composition, UNI Department of Music and bass player; and Kevin Hart, freelance musician from Peoria, Ill., and percussionist.

The fee for the UNI Jazz Combo Camp is $300. The application deadline is May 22.

Boys' basketball camps offered at UNI

CEDAR FALLS -- The University of Northern Iowa is offering boys' basketball camps in June and July. Featured will be individual camps, a shooting day camp, and an offensive improvement/big man-point guard camp and team camps.

The individual day camp is June 11-15. Campers may choose the morning session, running from 8:30 a.m. to noon daily; or the afternoon session, running from 1 to 4:30 p.m. daily. These are commuter camps for boys 7-15 and focus is on individual skill work within the team. The fee for either session is $90. A camper may attend both sessions for $140.

The shooting day camp is June 15, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., for boys 9 to 18. Cost is $60.

The offensive improvement/big man-point guard camp is June 25-27 for campers 9 to 18 years of age. At this camp, participants develop skills in ball-handling, shooting, passing, rebounding and movement. The commuter fee is $150 and includes lunch and dinner. The resident fee is $170 and includes full room and board.

Team camps are June 2-3, 16-17, and June 30-July 1. The commuter fee is $350 per team. The resident fee is $350 per team, plus $50 per player. One coach per team receives complimentary room and board.

All camps require a non-refundable deposit.

Seniors in UNI 's Department of Industrial Technology complete design projects

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Students in the University of Northern Iowa Department of Industrial Technology recently completed their Electro-Mechanical System senior design projects. Faculty adviser on all projects was Recayi Pecen, assistant professor and Electro-Mechanical System coordinator.

"Design and Implementation of Web-based Solar/Wind Green Power Monitoring station," sponsored by the UNI College of Natural Science (CNS) SOAR grant, was completed by Lucas Devries, Plainfield, and Joshua Williard, Waterloo.

"Enhancement of Power Reliability for an Industrial Substation," sponsored by Cedar Falls Utilities (CFU), John Deere Product Engineering Center (PEC), and CNS Soar grant, was completed by Jason Odefey, Dubuque. The project is being conducted in conjunction with CFU.

"Electrical Power Monitoring and Power Quality Improvement," sponsored by Nestle USA and CNS SOAR grant, was completed by Jeremy Scherbring, Dyersville.

"A Noval HVAC Diagnostic Unit Implementation for one of the John Deere's 7010 Series Tractors," sponsored by John Deere PEC, was completed by Josh Fox and Adam Suby, both of Marshalltown. David Larson, of John Deere PEC, was co-adviser on this project.

UNI offers wrestling camps

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa is offering wrestling camps for students 7 to 18 years old. Featured are two team camps, July 8-13 and 15-20; a feet-to-back camp, July 13-15; and a technique camp, July 15-20. Camp director is Brad Penrith, now entering his second year as UNI's head wrestling coach.

The team camps emphasize team competition in a dual-meet format and development skills of each wrestler. The resident fee is $240. The resident fee is $215 per wrestler if the team is comprised of 10 or more wrestlers. The commuter fee is $185 per wrestler and includes lunches only. The commuter fee is $165 per wrestler if the team is comprised of 10 or more. The coaches' fee is $120 and includes room and board.

The feet-to-back camp covers takedown, throws and pinning combinations. The resident fee is $170 and includes full room and board. The commuter fee is $115 and includes lunches only.

The technique camp is designed for the development of the beginner to the advanced wrestler and features some of the top coaches and wrestlers in the country as instructors. The resident fee is $275. The commuter fee is $185 and includes lunches only.

Camp staff members are UNI coaches Derek Mountsier, Randy Pugh, Jose DeAnda and Tony Davis. UNI wrestlers scheduled to appear are Eric Brown, Dustin Brewer, Eric Dunmire, Jon Garvin, Kyle Hansen, Jeff Harrison, Eric Hauan, Jordan Holm, Tyler Hubbard, Paul Hynek, Drew Kelly, Bob Koenig, Tom Koenig, Nate Lawrenz, Dylan Long, Jason Payne, Keith Pearl, and Sean Stender.

All Panther Sports Camps require a non-refundable deposit per session to guarantee a spot.
