CEDAR FALLS, Iowa The 4th Annual Alliant Energy Electrathon was held Saturday, May 13, at Hawkeye Downs Speedway, Cedar Rapids. According to Elizabeth Plasket, energy educator at the University of Northern Iowa's Center for Energy and Environmental Education (CEEE), 18 high school teams from Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin spent a year designing, building, and testing the one-person electric cars that competed in the event. Thirty-two cars raced in three, 60-minute endurance heats.
In the college division, car number 6, driven by Nathan Flatgard of the American Institute of Business, Des Moines took first place with 76 laps, or 38 miles per hour.
In the National Electric Cart Association (NECA) division, car number 333, driven by Chad Konyndyk of Coopersville High School, Coopersville, Mich. took first place with 74 laps or 37 miles per hour.
In the Electrathon division, car number 44, driven by Steve Scudder of Lakeshore High School, Stevensville, Mich. took first place with a new Iowa Electrathon record of 78 laps, or 39 miles per hour. Car number 41, driven by Matt Miller of Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School took second place with 77 laps, or 38.5 miles per hour. And car number 300, driven by Ben Morris of Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School was third with 76 laps, or 38 miles per hour.
In addition to designing, building, testing and racing the car, teams raised funds, obtained donated equipment, handled public relations and filed monthly progress reports throughout the year. The monthly progress reports determined pole position.
Winners of the report writing competition were: First place Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School; second place Forest City High School; third place St. Ansgar High School; honorable mention Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn High School, Perry High School, and Muscatine High School.
The Iowa Electrathon program provides a meaningful way for students who are the car designers and engineers of the future to evaluate energy alternatives, and helps educate the general public about the link between energy consumption and environmental consequences, said Plasket.
Dedric Ward, Cedar Rapids native, UNI graduate and New York Jets wide receiver was the official race starter.
The event was sponsored by UNI's Center for Energy and Environmental Education, Alliant Energy, the Iowa Renewable Energy Association and the Iowa Energy Center. Planning is already underway for the 2001 event, which will feature original electric cars from high schools from the East coast and the Midwest in a Midwest National Race.
