2000 Technology Camp introduces 7th and 8th graders to the changing world of cyberspace at the University of Northern Iowa

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa— Malcolm Price Laboratory School and the University of Northern Iowa Conferences and Visitor Services will host the 2000 Technology Camp, June 26-30, for students entering seventh or eighth grade in fall 2000.

Students participating in the event will: learn how to create web pages with Claris Home Page; gain knowledge of graphic resources on the web; learn how to operate digital cameras and scanners; and how to utilize various search engines. Information about copyright, web ethics and acceptable use of the internet's resources will also be introduced. Participants will also learn how to use Netscape Communicator, Internet Explorer, CDs and presentation software.

Registration, with a $50 non-refundable deposit, must be completed and sent to the UNI Conferences and Visitor Services by June 1. The $50 deposit will be used towards the student's tuition, which is $220. This fee includes materials, meals and recreational activities. The remaining balance will be due June 16.

Upon registration, an informational packet will be sent containing details on payment, the schedule and what the students should bring. This packet will also include the following: release and medical authorization form, acceptable use form and a web permission form.

The University of Northern Iowa will offer registered nurses convenient and flexible general studies courses; informational meeting June 12

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa —An informational meeting on how registered nurses can complete their bachelor of arts degree at the University of Northern Iowa will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Monday, June 12, in the Royal Oak Room of UNI's Maucker Union.

The bachelor of arts degree for registered nurses allows them to choose their major courses, take daytime or evening classes and receive credit for their registered nursing license. Participants will receive individualized help in choosing the courses that will best suit their needs.

Northern University High School students take top place for the seventh straight year at the State of Iowa Olympiada of Spoken Russian

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa— The team from Northern University High School won its seventh consecutive state title in the 2000 State of Iowa Olympiada of Spoken Russian held recently at the University of Northern Iowa Maucker Student Union. It is sponsored by the American Council of Teachers of Russian, Washington, D.C.

Jim Sweigert, UNI instructor in teaching who teaches Russian at NUHS, said this year there were 40 participants in the Olympiada from three schools, which included Marshalltown High School and West Des Moines Valley High School. The judges for the contest were from UNI and Iowa State University. Students and professors from Iowa State University attended the event to prepare for a potential future college Olympiada.

Taking first place in level four in the individual spoken dialogues category was Nathan Marra. Terri Thompson took second place and Brian Oleson took third place. In level three, Brian Perry took first place, while Erin McElligatt took second place and Kelsey Schmidt took third place. In level two, Ian Cawley took second place, while Ryan Hahn took third. In level one, Sameet Sangha won first place, Joe Wartick won second place and Hasan Al-Mabuk won third place.

In the Mixed-Team Quiz Bowl competition, the NU team captured first, second and third: first place went to Bob Langenwalter, Jenna Davis, Mike Piehl and Terri Thompson; second place went to Sameet Sangha, Erin McElligatt and Jordan Backstrom; and third place went to Danny Kramer, Ian Cawley, Josh McCabe and Kristen Perry.

In Group Spoken Dialogues/Creative Team Competition, first place went to the group of Janelle Doddema, Alex Dow, Josh McCabe, Erin McElligatt, Mike Piehl, Brian Perry, Kelsey Schmidt and Mary Weber for Russian folk dance; second place went to the group consisting of Amy McGuire, Brian Oleson and Terri Thompson for Russian folk song; and third place went to the group consisting of Ian Cawley, Jenna Davis and Ryan Hahn for their skit.
