Romano said beginning this year, the annual event has been renamed the Grace Ann Hovet Student Leadership Awards program "as a legacy to Grace Ann Hovet, former UNI professor of English, who retired in 1999. Hovet researched, designed and brought to life Sue Follon's idea for a leadership studies program at UNI. Their vision for the program was to combine curricular and co-curricular leadership opportunities for students within the framework of a liberal arts education.
"Hovet's leadership was evident in the development of a number of other programs on campus, including Women's Studies. We acknowledge her many contributions by naming this annual recognition of student leadership in her honor."
Sue Follon was the first woman to be named a vice president at UNI. She served as vice president for educational and student services from 1985 until her death in 1998. Follon conceived the idea for a leadership studies program at UNI as a commitment to preparing students for leadership roles. The Dr. Sue Follon Scholarship for Women in Leadership honors her accomplishments.
The awards program was sponsored by the UNI Leadership Studies program, the Office of Student Activities, the Office of the Vice President for Educational and Student Services, and the UNI Speakers' Fund, with student activity fees allocated by the Northern Iowa Student Government.
