CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa's women's rugby team won the Division II national women's rugby tournament in Rockford, Ill., this past weekend (May 5-6). UNI defeated Lockhaven 45-6. The Lockhaven team had not allowed any points by opponents in its last 27 games. The Panthers clinched the title with a 57-6 victory over the University of Nevada-Reno.
The Panthers' co-captain, Jen Sinkler, was chosen tournament MVP. Jennifer Murra is adviser for the team, and Steve Murra is volunteer coach.
Ranked first in the Midwest Division, the UNI team went into the tournament with a 15-1 record for fall 2000, and a 10-0 record for spring 2001.
The women's rugby team was established in 1994, and is funded in part with student activity fees through UNI Wellness and Recreation Services, business sponsorship, fundraising projects, and donations from parents and friends.
