CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Some 100 high school sophomores and juniors from around the state are expected to attend the "Challenge of Teaching Conference," from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, April 27, on the University of Northern Iowa campus.
The conference, to be held in the Schindler Education Center, is sponsored by UNI's Kappa Delta Pi (KDP) education honor society, and run by student members. It is designed to help the high school participants explore the idea of becoming a teacher.
The day is divided into three sessions: "Teaching as an Activity," "Teaching as a Profession" and "The Life of an Education Major." Groups will focus on teaching activities, professional information and teacher preparation. Activities are designed to answer three questions: what teaching is like, what kind of occupation it is and what the life of an education major is like.
Amanda Campbell of Ottumwa is the conference co-coordinator, along with Kimberly Couch of Drakesville.
Conference section chairs are Erin Cook of Cherokee, Rebekah Choate of Webster City, Melissa Kinyon of Ames, Trina Modlin of Sioux City and Wendy Gordon of Sioux City.
Presenters include Sarah Hinrichs of West Des Moines, Lori Rich of Waterloo, Jenny Johnson of Monticello, Tabitha Waltz of Harley, Dan Butler of Dubuque, Meredith Morin of Mount Pleasant, Alaina Shoopman of Waterloo, Audra Block of Ankeny, Bethany Kromminga of Belle Plaine, Candace Messamer of Knoxville, Lara Schlarmann of Dubuque and Ann VanEtten of Ackley.
Working as chair behind the scenes is Shannon Larson of Wesley. Working with Larson are Rebecca Gacke of Sibley and Bethany Kromminga.
According to Stephen Fortgang, KDP faculty counselor and UNI associate professor of education, "There is also a very educational value in this process for our student members. Their work on this conference is helping them develop their organizational, leadership and teaching skills." The UNI chapter is the only student chapter that provides such a conference for high school students.
For more information on the "Challenge of Teaching Conference," call Fortgang at (319) 273-2049.
