CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- "Cinco de Mayo" will be celebrated on the University of Northern Iowa campus Friday, April 27 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. outside Maucker Union, weather permitting.
The celebration of Cinco de Mayo marks the date the Mexican army defeated the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. UNI's observation of the holiday is held a week in advance due to semester finals in the first week of May.
Live music will be performed by "Grupo Musical Los Chones" of Marshalltown. Traditional foods will be on sale. Activities for children include pinatas and cascarones, which are eggs filled with confetti.
According to Guy Sims, UNI assistant director for student activities, a group of about 50 people from San Antonio will have the opportunity to participate in the festivities. The group of prospective students and their families will visit the campus Friday.
The Cinco de Mayo celebration at UNI is sponsored in part by the Maucker Union Policy Board, Hispanic-Latino Student Union and UNI Multicultural Activities and Programming Committee, with fees allocated by the Northern Iowa Student Government.
In the event of inclement weather, activities will be moved inside to the Maucker Union Expansion.
