UNI Gallery of Art to present 'MA Exhibition, Spring 2002' with opening reception, public art walking tour
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa Gallery of Art will present "MA Exhibition, Spring 2002" from Sunday, April 21 through April 28, with an opening reception hosted by the graduating artists from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 21.
As a prelude to the opening, and as part of UNIs "Arts in April" celebration, the Gallery is offering a short walking tour of public art on campus from 1 to 3 p.m. The tour will begin, at 1 p.m., in the Kamerick Art Buildings (KAB) first floor lobby and circle the campus, including a stop in the Piazza at the Redeker Center for refreshments. The tour will end in the KAB lobby, just as the "MA Exhibition" opening reception is scheduled to begin. All events are free and open to the public.
Artists featured in the masters thesis exhibition are Justin Campoy of Waterloo, Karla Oler of Cedar Falls, and Yayoi Teramoto, a native of Saitama, Japan. Campoy creates large scale paintings while Teramoto paints small canvasses. Oler, two-time recipient of the Tostlebe-Ray Graduate Art Scholarship, makes prints and builds mixed media floor pieces.
Public art is a collective term for art objects, landscape and architecture located in places accessible to the public. UNI's campus art collection spans a century, beginning with the murals of Lang Hall, installed in 1902. A public art purchase program was instituted on the UNI campus in 1960 by former UNI President J.W. Maucker to promote the arts and emphasize the liberal arts focus of general education programs. A similar program became state law in 1979. Named The Iowa Art in State Buildings Program, the law requires that one-half of one percent of the budget for new or significantly renovated state buildings is to be spent on artwork.
In addition to Sunday's tour, guided tours are available by appointment by calling (319) 273-3095.
Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday; noon to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. The gallery is located at the corner of Hudson Road and West 27th Street, on the main floor of the Kamerick Art Building. For more information, call (319) 273-3095 or visit www.uni.edu/artdept/gallery.
The master's thesis exhibition in the Gallery of Art and the public art walking tour are both part of UNI's "Arts in April" celebration. For a full listing of arts events, see the UNI Web site at www.uni.edu.

Scientific illustrations on display at Rod Library as part of Arts in April through April 30
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Scientific illustrations by Jeff Tamplin are on display in the University of Northern Iowa's Rod Library as part of Arts in April. Tamplin's work can be viewed in the display cases outside the Special Collections and University Archives on the library's third floor.
Tamplin, assistant professor of biology at UNI, is an author and illustrator who has more than 200 illustrations published in textbooks, scientific journals, magazines and instructional manuals.
Using a practice called pointillism, Tamplin creates texture and value with individual dots. The practice is similar to the process a computer printer goes through when transferring images into pixels. The end result is to make a picture look smooth and connected from far away, as if it were drawn in pencil. Tamplin's work, done in pen, ink, watercolor and graphite is noted for its realistic interpretation, anatomical accuracy and detailed stippling effects. Tamplin has been drawing most of his life and began experimenting with pointilism in 1989.
For more information call Jeff Tamplin at (319) 273-2327.

UNI Gallery of Art announces Award Winners from the 'Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition'
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa Gallery of Art recently held its Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition, presenting nearly $4,500 in purchase and merit awards.
The competition is held each year to showcase the work of undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of Art. More than 400 pieces of art in a variety of media were submitted; however, only 135 were chosen for display by juror Will Mentor, assistant professor of painting and drawing at the University of Iowa. More than 500 people attended the awards ceremony and opening reception.
Darrell Taylor, acting director of the UNI Gallery of Art, said it is important to make the distinction between the awards. Merit awards are cash prizes awarded for excellence and let students retain the artwork. Purchase awards indicate the artwork is sold. Award donors included numerous university departments and organizations as well as extra-university sources such as Jennifer Rettig of Rettig Design, Inc., Spirit Lake, a 1991 M.A. graduate of UNI in art with an emphasis in graphic design, and Porter's Camera Store, Inc., Cedar Falls.
This year, the 2002 Guillaume Art Project Award, went to Gillian G. Christy, a sculpture student from Davenport. Given as a scholarship, the award is in memory of long-time art department head Harry Guillaume. Another highlight of the evening was the dual awarding of Nicole Fullard's painting, "Jello is Sexy." Fullard, from Charles City, received a purchase award from the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center and a merit award from the student organization, ArtsUNI.
Awards from the UNI Office of the President included a purchase award to Chris DuPont's poster design "The Wright Way" and a merit award to Meg Stineman's alabaster sculpture, "With Child," both from the UNI Office of the President. DuPont is from Cedar Rapids and Stineman is from Cedar Falls.
Award winners include __(Name)__ of __(Hometown)__, who received a __(Award)__ from __(Award Donor)__ for his/her work __(Name of art work)__.
