Over the past eight years, the University of Northern Iowa has sent nearly 400 student teachers to hone their craft in San Antonio, as part of a special agreement between one of that city's school districts and the university. Roger Kueter, head of the UNI Department of Teaching, says most of those students, upon graduation, choose to live and work in Iowa, even though they could make more money teaching in Texas. "I think it speaks positively for this state," said Kueter. "I think it means that these students want to teach because they like working with children, and they enjoy the quality of life in Iowa. Money is not the most important thing for them."

KGRK, UNI's student radio station, has returned to the air, and is now available campus-wide. In previous years, the station's signal went only to specific buildings through pipes and framework. But now, with a low-power AM signal, audio transmission via campus cable Channel 5, and Web streaming, the entire campus is privy to the station's alternative music, specialty shows, sports, news and public affairs programming. Previously stations like KGRK were limited in terms of transmission methods, but recent FCC regulations allow for a broader scope. The station's frequency is 1440 AM. It can be picked up on the Web at www.uni.edu/kgrk.
