'Take Back the Night Rally 2002' at UNI, Wednesday, April 17
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa The Take Back the Night Rally 2002 will be Wednesday, April 17, beginning at 5 p.m., on the University of Northern Iowa's Maucker Union Plaza. The rain location is Maucker Union Expansion C.
The nationwide event takes place each year in April. Melanie Klein, chairperson of UNI's Gender Equality Association, says the rally will unify men and women against sexual violence and battering. "It's a time for survivors of sexual abuse and physical violence to share their stories, celebrate their healing and stand with others in solidarity."
This year's events include performances by Colleen Jameson, folk singer, songwriter and social activist from St. Louis; and the UNI Students Against a Violent Environment (SAVE) forum actors. In addition, there will be an open-mic session and a candlelight vigil. During the vigil a performance by Cheri Nelson, poet, will remember survivors of rape, sexual abuse and domestic violence. After the vigil, participants will march down College Street. Then, participants will view a dress rehearsal of the play, "Extra-Curricular: A Novel of Rape on Campus."
