Beginning Reading Conference to be held at the University of Northern Iowa, April 14

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — The University of Northern Iowa Price Laboratory School will present the Beginning Reading Conference on Friday, April 14, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Schindler Education Center. The event has served as a forum for Iowa's early elementary reading educators for more than 30 years.

Participants in the event will be able to examine how new technologies relate to elementary education, how to evaluate and enhance the effectiveness of their classroom strategies and learn valuable tips and tools for maximizing resources.

Tomie dePaola, nationally known children's author/illustrator will be the keynote speaker at the event. He will share experiences from his childhood and from his 30 plus years illustrating more than 200 books as well as writing the stories for nearly 90 of them. His most recent book, 26 Fairmount Avenue, is the first in a series of autobiographical chapter books based on his life as a young man.

dePaola has received virtually every significant recognition for his books in the children's book world, including both the Caldecott and Newbery Honor Awards from the American Library Association; the Smithson Medal from the Smithsonian Institution; and the Regina Medal from the Catholic Library Association. He was a USA nominee in illustration for the Hans Christian Andersen Medal.

However, dePaola says his favorite distinction “is having had the most books by any artist/author on the International Reading Association's `Children's Choices,' a list selected each year by children.” All of his books exude a reverence for family and, he says, he “wants his books to make children laugh and to help them feel safe.”

He will conduct a book signing at 11:30 a.m.

In addition to dePaola's speech, teachers at Price Lab will present their ideas on how to bring the author's work into the classroom. They have been using his books throughout the year and have prepared a booklet of ideas and activities other teachers can use. Presentations will be offered throughout the conference in: preschool/kindergarten, first and second grade, third grade, fourth grade, physical education, drama, Spanish and guidance.

Among the nearly three dozen other informative presentations or sectionals, to be presented by teachers and professors from throughout the state, will be: “Balanced Tutoring: Explore Ways to Assess and Use Strengths to Motivate Struggling Readers,” “Emergent/Early Writing in the Balanced Literacy Classroom” and “Parent Kid Teacher Investigators: Learning Together and From Each Other.”

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — Iowa Lieutenant Governor Sally Pederson will speak at Earth Year 2000, a one-day workshop on community-based environmental management programs, Thursday, April 13. It is designed for professionals with little or no background in environmental management systems.

Marci Carter, waste reduction specialist at the Iowa Waste Reduction Center, housed at the University of Northern Iowa, said the workshop is “important because it informs the audience about environmental management systems, and tells them what the benefits are and why getting involved is important.” The workshop targets city officials like mayors, town managers, council members, environmental health coordinators and other interested parties such as state policy makers and non-governmental organizations.

Also speaking at the conference will be Rita Schenck, executive director of the Institute for Environmental Research and Education (IERE), and Bill Lynn, a senior fellow and head of the Iowa Office of IERE.

She consults to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Advisory Board, speaks and educates internationally on environmental systems and life cycle assessment.

Lynn is also the director of the Environmental Management Program and associate professor of economics and finance at St. Ambrose University, Davenport, Iowa. He chairs the National Association of Environmental Professionals, Academic Centers for Environmental Excellence.
