CEDAR FALLS, Iowa The 7th Annual University of Northern Iowa Undergraduate Social Science Research Conference will be held on Saturday, April 8, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Schindler Education Center. Registration for the event will begin at 8:45 a.m. followed by the welcome and announcements at 9:15 a.m.
Phyllis Baker, associate dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and director of the Graduate Program in Women's Studies at UNI, will be the keynote speaker at 9:25 a.m. Her topic will be Holding a Double-Edged Sword: Women in Substance Abuse Treatment. A panel discussion, focusing on What can I do with a B.A. in the Social Sciences, will follow Baker's keynote address.
The day's events will conclude with guest speaker John Hagedorn. He will discuss Gangs, Drugs and Violence in Urban Settings, in a 2:15 p.m. presentation. Hagedorn has been a professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago for the past 10 years. His most recent studies are presented in the book Female Gangs in America: Essays on Girls, Gangs and Gender, which he co-authored.
Other events include oral and poster presentations as well as awards and an opportunity to evaluate the conference.
