CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Local businessman and philanthropist Rick Young will lead the Cedar Valley advisory council of the University of Northern Iowa's "Students First" campaign. President of Young Plumbing and Heating, Young also is a trustee for the university's foundation.
Other members of the Cedar Valley advisory council are Tim Bandow, Bob Beach, Ross Christensen, Dennis and Susan Clark, Adele Davis, Dan Deery, John Deery Jr., Arnold Delbridge, D. Jay Ellis, Ed Gallagher, Eldred and Donna Harman, Camille Hogan, Dale Jackson, Ken Lockard, Rose Lorenz, Dave Mason, John Martin, Bob Molinaro, Jim Mudd Sr., Roger Neumann, Dave and Cindy Peters, Mike and Betsy Peterson, Joan Poe, Tom and Maureen Porth, John Rathjen, LeRoy Redfern, Jim Slife, Robert Smith, Dee Vandeventer, Joe Vich, Marilyn Voorhees, and Dan Watters.
The "Students First" campaign has a goal of $75 million for scholarships, academic program support and facilities, including $15 million to build a multi-sport arena to be called the McLeodUSA Center. Other capital projects include McElroy Hall, which houses the Freeburg Early Childhood Program; a human performance center to be built onto the north end of the UNI-Dome; renovation of Lang Hall and Russell Hall; and equipment for McCollum Science Hall.
The leadership gift phase of the campaign's local drive is now underway. The Cedar Valley major gift drive kickoff will be later this year.
The university's last major campaign, which ended in 1995, raised over $7.5 million in the Cedar Valley.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Five University of Northern Iowa students will present at the Iowa Reading Association's annual conference in Des Moines, Friday and Saturday, April 6-7, in the Des Moines Conference Center. This year's conference is titled "The Reading Challenge."
The students will present their own specific methods to improve literacy instruction in the classroom. Paula Lake, graduate student, Fort Madison, will present "Spill a Story." Lieh Anne Abrahamson, senior, Mason City, will present "Open Mind Portrait." Lisa Quandahl, senior, Randolph, Wis., will present "Story Faces." Jennifer Reis, senior, Altoona, will present "Grand Conversations." Jenny Waller, senior, Cedar Falls, will present "Sketch to Stretch."
The students are under the direction of Charline Barnes, UNI associate professor of reading/language arts. Barnes requested volunteers from her spring semester course, "Remedial Reading," to make the 10-15 minute presentations to an audience of about 100 Iowa educators. Barnes selected the five based on the merits of their proposals.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Michael S. Turner, chair of the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Chicago, will be the University of Northern Iowa Sigma Xi lecturer, Monday, April 9, in the Great Hall of the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center on the UNI campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Turner is a cosmologist whose research focuses on the earliest moments of the universe, according to Lynn Brant, president of the UNI Sigma Xi chapter. Brant said Turner has made important contributions to inflationary universe theory and efforts to understand the role of dark matter in the early universe. According to Brant, his monograph, "The Early Universe" is a landmark publication.
Turner holds prestigious positions at both the University of Chicago and the Enrico Fermi Institute, and is a member of the scientific staff of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. Turner is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and member of the National Academy of Sciences.
His lecture is sponsored by the College of Natural Sciences and Sigma Xi , the Scientific Research Society. A reception will follow the lecture in the lobby of the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- More than 400 pieces of work in various media were submitted for the University of Northern Iowa's Annual Juried Art Exhibition, a competitive event for students. Juror Lesley Wright, director of the Faulconer Gallery at Grinnell College, selected 100 works for the exhibition that is hosted by the UNI Gallery of Art. Merit awards and purchase awards totaling $3,900 were presented to 40 UNI students.
Merit awards are cash prizes awarded for excellence, with the student retaining the artwork. Purchase awards are cash prizes awarded for excellence, with the purchaser owning the artwork at the end of the exhibition.
The evening ended with the presentation of the most coveted award, the University of Northern Iowa Presidential Purchase Award. The selected pieces will be on display throughout the year in UNI President Robert Koob's office. Students selected for this honor were Molly Bruahn, senior art major from Dubuque, for her print "Retreat," and Kate Hansen, senior art major from Blue Grass, for her painting, "Untitled".

The exhibition is free and open to the public and will be on display through April 12. UNI Gallery of art hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday; Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.
