Hearst Visiting Lecturer Mel Chin to discuss his work, lead workshop during week-long UNI residency

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Artist Mel Chin will be a Hearst Visiting Lecturer in the University of Northern Iowa Department of Art Monday through Saturday, April 8-13. He will present a lecture on his work at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 9, in the Art Auditorium, Room 111 of the Kamerick Art Building. During the week, he will conduct a workshop with students addressing their artistic response to economic and environmental issues in Iowa.

Chin is known for a broad range of approaches to his art, including works that require multi-disciplinary, collaborative teamwork and works that conjoin cross-cultural aesthetics with complex ideas, according to Richard Colburn, UNI professor of art and chair of the Hearst Lecture Series.

Chin is a graduate of Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn. In 1998, he completed two large-scale public commissions, the Seven Wonders project for the Sesquicentennial Park in Houston, Texas; and Signal for the Broadway/Lafayette Subway Station in New York City. The Houston project featured the art of 1,050 public school children. The Subway project provided a forum for the Native American tribes of the Six Nations.

Chin is the recipient of numerous awards and grants including a Rockefeller Foundation grant, a Pollock/Krasner Foundation fellowship, a Tiffany Foundation Award and several NEA Fellowships. His work has been presented in solo exhibitions at the Hirshorn Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, among others.
