UNI student arrested for simple assault

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- A University of Northern Iowa student was arrested today on campus after a minor disturbance. Dave Zarifis, director of Public Safety, said the student allegedly damaged the sign of a representative of Missionaries to the Preborn, a Milwaukee pro-life group that was demonstrating on campus. The student, who also allegedly initiated physical contact with the representative, was charged with simple assault and criminal mischief.

"It's a delicate subject, one that will always raise passions and tempers on both sides," Zarifis said. "But UNI does allow individuals to disseminate information and share their ideas, as long as they do so in the free-speech areas, don't impede the educational process and don't impose a danger to themselves or others."

UNI co-sponsoring Alliant Energy-Iowa Electrathon trials

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa is co-sponsoring the first annual Iowa Electrathon Rail Trail trials at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 7 in Waverly. Cars will meet at the Waverly Recycling Center parking lot on Bremer Avenue for trial runs in preparation for the Alliant Energy Midwest National Iowa Electrathon Competition on May 19 in Des Moines. Teams of builders from participating high schools will test their cars on the trail in this non-competitive time trial.

The trail is funded by Waverly Light and Power and provides ideal conditions for running the one-person electric vehicles. “A hard, flat surface is necessary so that the cars can open up full throttle and test their precise ability,” said Nora Taylor, the UNI student who is serving as director of the project.

The trail is 7.50 miles long, and 10 feet wide. Built on the site of the old Chicago Northwestern Railroad, it crosses the Cedar River and continues through downtown Waverly before heading east.

About 12 schools are entering cars for the trial run. The participating high schools spend the school year building and testing their cars. In addition, each team must raise funds, obtain donated equipment, handle a range of public relations tasks and prepare monthly progress reports.

The Iowa Electrathon is an educational program co-sponsored by Alliant Energy for high school students who design, build, and race electric cars. These cars are limited to a battery capacity of 64 pounds of standard lead acid batteries. The rules for building are established by Electrathon America, a national electric vehicle organization established in the late '80s.

Real World Education, an independent organization comprised of Waverly High School students, has worked with Waverly Parks and Recreation Department to secure the trail for the event and will provide volunteers at trail crossings.

The Iowa Electrathon Rail Trail trial is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Elizabeth Plasket, energy educator, at (319) 273-6012.
