UNI alum and educator to speak on ‘The E-Unification of Rural Poland’ Thursday, April 4

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Patrick H. Mooney will speak on "The E-Unification of Rural Poland," at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 4, in Sabin Hall, Room 102, at the University of Northern Iowa. This event is free and open to the public.

Mooney, a professor of sociology at the University of Kentucky, received his B.A. and M.A. degrees from UNI, and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, all in sociology. His area of specialty is in the sociology of Polish agriculture focusing on rural class structure, agrarian social movements and agricultural cooperatives.

Mooney's visit is sponsored by the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching's 57 Fund, in conjunction with the departments of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminology, and Political Science The fund's purpose is to integrate alumni into the curriculum.

UNI alum, now an accounting executive, to discuss Enron debacle

Tim Throndson, a 1983 UNI accounting graduate, now Global Tax Leader at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) Consulting, will speak about "Enron-- The Beginning of the Great Debate" during the Matt Parrott Integrity Awards Ceremony, beginning at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 3, in the Great Reading Room of Seerley Hall at UNI. He will speak about the responsibility of both accounting education programs and accounting firms in leading the way for ethical practice of the profession, and ensuring that incidents such as the recent Enron-Andersen debacle are not repeated.

In addition to his speech, he will be available to interested members of the media immediately following his address (approximately 9 a.m.), for a short period of time, in the Great Reading Room, Seerley Hall.

UNI professor helps ROTC cadets understand religion's influence on war

Ken Atkinson, UNI assistant professor of philosophy and religion, will present "Can War Be Just?: Warfare, Religion and Ethics in Western Culture," to ROTC classes at UNI Tuesday, April 9, at 9:30 a.m. and noon in Room 204 of the West Gym.

The talk will examine the history and debates concerning war in the Western tradition among its three great religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Also featured will be an exploration of attitudes held by Jews, Christians and Muslims about war; and an examination of events since Sept. 11. The presentation includes research published by Atkinson.
