The Iowa-Illinois Safety Council will present the University of Northern Iowa a safety award for outstanding achievement in accident prevention. The presentation will take place during the council's conference in Des Moines, April 4-5.
The national incident rate for universities and educational institutions is 3.1 per year; UNI's is 2.24. The incident rate is the number of occupational injuries/illnesses or lost workdays per 100 full-time employees. Recorded incidents are those involving an occupational injury or illness. Not counted are cases that involve one-time treatment, or minor injuries that do not ordinarily require medical care.
Cindy Houlson, UNI's safety coordinator, noted this is the first time the university has received such an award. "UNI has made a concentrated effort to keep our employees safe though a series of programs and precautions, and this is proof that our hard work is paying off."

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa Museum will display its recently acquired collection of carvings from the remote Indonesian Asmat culture through December 2001. An opening reception for the exhibit will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, April 6, at the museum. Sue Grosboll, museum director, will present a gallery talk at 6 p.m.
The collection features shields, spears, drums and other items collected during the mid-1900s, in the Indonesian region where the Asmat live. The Asmat believe the carvings provide a home for the spirits of ancestors.
"These carvings represent a valuable resource for understanding cultural expression, and for seeing the world from the perspective of another culture," explained Grosboll.
The collection was acquired through the partial donation of Thomas F. Oehrlein and with support from the Friends of the UNI Museums, Dorothy Jean Ray, the Willis and Hazel Wagner Endowment, the Office of the Provost, the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Continuing Education and Special Programs. The exhibit and programs were funded in part by Humanities Iowa, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
For more information, call the museum, (319) 273-2188.
