University of Northern Iowa accounting majors put knowledge to the test during tax season; participate in VITA

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - A group of University of Northern Iowa accounting majors are available to help those who need assistance with their income taxes and will continue working through the federal income tax filing deadline of Monday, April 17. Forty-three students are working from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays as part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, or VITA.

(Name of students), of (Hometown), is participating in the VITA program at UNI. (He/She) is the (son/daughter) of (Parent name/names).

VITA was established by the Internal Revenue Service to help people who may not be able to afford professional tax assistance. The program also provides accounting students an experiential learning opportunity as they work with people in actual income tax situations. Dennis Schmidt, UNI professor of accounting heads the program.
