GLOBE Iowa Workshop to be held at UNI

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- A GLOBE Iowa Workshop (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment) will be held on the University of Northern Iowa campus Sunday through Saturday, April 1-7.

GLOBE Iowa is the Iowa Academy of Science franchise of the worldwide GLOBE program. The workshop will be held in the Center for Energy and Environmental Education at UNI. The workshop is designed to train teachers of Iowa K-12 schools to use the GLOBE program in their own classrooms.

The GLOBE program is a hands-on environmental science curriculum presented by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA). The program is a worldwide network of more than 8,000 schools in more than 90 countries collecting atmospheric and environmental data that is used by GLOBE scientists to create maps, charts, and other multimedia materials. Students, teachers, parents and the public can then view the combined data from all the GLOBE schools.

Each GLOBE workshop features lectures and activities led by scientists trained by NASA and NOAA. The GLOBE Iowa Workshop will feature two guest speakers from UNI. Daryl Smith, professor of biology, will speak on the Iowa prairie, Monday, April 2. Mohammad Iqbal, associate professor of earth science, will speak on the hydrology of Black Hawk County, Tuesday, April 3.

The workshop is open to all Iowa teachers. The $1,700 participant-fee has been underwritten by the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust of Muscatine, allowing teachers participating in the entire workshop to attend at no cost. Participants will also receive full Project WET (Water Education for Teachers) training, including 92 activities for the K-12 classroom, along with new and updated GLOBE materials, including videos, "big books," posters, new chapters and supplies. Teachers participating can also earn two hours of UNI credit.

More information on the GLOBE program is available at www.uni.edu/~iowawet/globe and www.globe.gov.
