Russian Orthodox Church culture during the 18th century will be the subject at the next UNI Current Research on Women (CROW) Forum Series
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa The social and religious life of women in 18th century Russia will be the subject of the Current Research on Women (CROW) Forum Series at noon Monday, April 3, in the Embassy Room of the University of Northern Iowašs Maucker Union.
Greg Bruess, UNI associate professor of history, will present "From Infanticide to Rape: Women and God in the Russia of Catherine the Great," a scholarly work on the religious culture of the Orthodox Church. His research delves into the Orthodox ecclesiastical courts and the "female" crimes committed against God by women. These crimes included infanticide, rape and incest. Bruess will also look at the degree of difference between the local and central authorities regarding certain acts of behavior which the state labeled a "crime" and the local population did not.
These documented cases present examples of individuals negotiating the difficult task of conforming to a set of attitudes and beliefs as mandated by the state and the Russian Orthodox Church as the only legitimate values for the Russian Empire. These individuals also tried maintaining allegiance to their local traditions. The relationships between these two identities were constantly in flux.
The Bruess lecture will be the final CROW Forum of this yearšs series. This is the 10th year of the series, which is sponsored by the UNI Graduate Program in Womenšs Studies. The event is free and open to the public.
