Amnesty International plans week-long protest of Schwarzkopf visit
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa chapter of Amnesty International will protest a visit to UNI by Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf through a week-long series of events. Schwarzkopf is scheduled to discuss "Leadership in Difficult Times," at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at UNI's Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center.
Titled "Iraq, Terrorism, and General Schwarzkopf," Amnesty International's protest begins Monday, April 1, with an information table from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Maucker Union.
On Tuesday, April 2, Amnesty International and the Cedar Falls Quakers will show a documentary, "Hidden Wars of Desert Storm," at 7:30 p.m. in Seerley Hall Room 115. Jeff Weiss, adjunct professor in political science at Des Moines Area Community College, will host the question-and-answer period.
The protest continues Wednesday, April 3, with a presentation, "American Terrorism?" at 7 p.m. in Schindler Education Center Room 246. Featured speakers are Robert Krueger, UNI adjunct professor in the Department of Modern Languages, who will discuss Nicaragua; and Chuck Quilty, co-founder of Voices in the Wilderness: A Campaign to End US/UN Sanctions Against Iraq, who will discuss Iraqi sanctions.
The final event will be a panel discussion Friday, April 5, at 7 p.m. in the State College Room of Maucker Union. Those participating are Peg Mullen, whose family was the subject of the movie "Friendly Fire"; Brian Terrell, executive director of Catholic Peace Ministry in Des Moines; and Rusty Martin, draft resister and Vietnam War protestor.
All events are free and open to the public.

Perceptions of Sikh motherhood topic of the next CROW Forum, April 1
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- "The Mother as Heroic Icon: Perceptions of Sikh Motherhood in the Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries" will be the topic of the next CROW Forum at the University of Northern Iowa, at noon Monday, April 1, in the Embassy Room of the Maucker Union.
Louis Fenech, UNI associate professor of history, will discuss his research on this topic.
The CROW (Current Research on Women) Forum is sponsored by the UNI Graduate Program in Women's Studies. It is free and open to the public.

UNI Regional Business Center offers computer training Wednesday, April 10
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Hands-on, basic computer training will be offered by the University of Northern Iowa's Regional Business Center (RBC), from 6 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, April 10, at the center, 212 E. 4th St., in downtown Waterloo.
The workshop, "Introduction to Computers," will explain the basic function and business application of computers, as well as demonstrate everyday computer skills. It is intended for people with little or no computer experience.
