Peter Yarrow discusses revolutionary anti-bullying program on UNI campus

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Although he is best known as one-third of the famed folk group "Peter, Paul and Mary," Peter Yarrow is now embarking on an educational crusade to keep children from becoming bullies. He will discuss this revolutionary program during a presentation at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 8, in the Great Hall of the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center (GBPAC). The event is sponsored by the University of Northern Iowa's College of Education and Cedar Valley's Promise.

Founded by Yarrow, "Don't Laugh At Me" helps transform schools, camps and other youth organizations into more compassionate, safe and respectful environments for children. The project provides free educational materials designed to build a climate that reduces the emotional and physical cruelty some children inflict upon each other through ridicule, bullying and, in extreme cases, violence.

The program features three curricula, one for grades two through five, another for grades six through eight, and a third for summer camps and after-school programs. All use inspiring music, video and materials based on the conflict-resolution curricula developed by the Resolving Conflict Creatively Program of Educators for Social Responsibility. There is no charge to attend, but seating is limited. To receive tickets, call the GBPAC, (319) 273-SHOW. For more information on the Don't Laugh At Me program, visit the Web site www.dontlaugh.org.

Cedar Valley's Promise, a grassroots organization founded after the 1997 President's Summit for American's Future and the youth initiative America's Promise, is celebrating its fifth anniversary.

Theatre UNI to present 'Angels in America' April 18-28

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Theatre UNI will present Tony Kushner’s Pulitzer Prize winning drama, "Angels in America, Part 1: Millennium Approaches," April 18 through 28, at the Strayer-Wood Theatre on the University of Northern Iowa campus.

The recipient of more than 15 awards, including four Tony Awards in 1993, Kushner’s play of sex, politics, and religion in Ronald Reagan’s America is a biting satirical drama that questions the meaning of life, death, faith, and love, according to Jay Edelnant, UNI professor of theatre and director for the UNI production. He noted the production contains nudity and subject material that may not be suitable for some audiences.

"In the short time since its 1991 premiere, 'Angels' has been repeatedly labeled one of the great plays of the 20th Century," said Edelnant. "It is certainly one of the greatest of the last half-century. Tony Kushner's clear and theatrically vivid vision of the human situation, pressured by religion, race, sexual orientation, and class, leads its characters to search for solace as the Millennium approaches. They find that their salvation lies not in traditional gods and ideology, but in other people."

Edelnant directed the rock musical 'Hair' last season at the Strayer-Wood.

Theatre UNI’s production of 'Angels' features Richard Glockner, UNI associate professor of theatre, in the role of Roy M. Cohn, and a cast of 18 students. Student cast members are: Michael J. Mullin, Sioux City; Jess C. White, Des Moines; Brian Duffy Waterloo; Jason Jackson, Dayton, Ohio; Rebecca Droste, Clinton; Jess Rafoth, Sarah Noll and Holly Richey, all from Dubuque; Lindsay Alena Schill, Union; Dana Baranowski, LaPorte City; Karle Meyers, Malcom; Ramsey Lampkin, Davenport; Jeff Johnson, Dike; James Dillon, Gary, Ind.; David R. Johnson, Jr., Camanche; Sebastian Wislocki, Gdansk, Poland; Josh Visnapuu, Springville; and Bryan Wave, Kaleva, Mich.

The production team includes UNI theatre faculty members Leonard Curtis, associate professor, as scenic designer; Eric Lange, associate professor, as lighting designer; and Amy S. RohrBerg, assistant professor, as costume designer.

Student designers include David Murray, Coralville, as sound designer; Lori Bonnstetter, West Bend, as hair designer; and C.J. Clemens, Waterloo, as make-up designer. Laura Buresh, Cedar Rapids, is the stage manager.

Theatre UNI will present "Angels in America, Part 1," April 18, 19, 20, 25, 26 and 27, at 7:30 p.m., and April 28, at 2 p.m., in the Strayer-Wood Theatre. Tickets are $8 for the general public and may be purchased by calling the Strayer-Wood Theatre box office at (319) 273-6381, or online at www.uni.edu/theatre.

UNI Gallery of Art presents 'Sculpture in the CAC Courtyard' now through April 15.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The UNI Gallery of Art, in conjunction with the UNI Department of Art, is presenting "Sculpture in the CAC Courtyard" now through April 15.

This year the UNI Department of Art's "Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition" is hosting a showing of large-scale sculptures, too large to view in the gallery proper. This is the first time in the history of annual juried student exhibitions that the UNI Gallery of Art has hosted outdoor public art works.

On March 11, several UNI sculpture students and UNI Department of Art Shop Technician, Marc Moulton, temporarily anchored four student sculptures to the courtyard pavement. The sculptures are as follows: "Horse and Rider" by Jim Benedict of Saint Charles; "Paragon Abstraction" by Gerald Cowger, Waterloo; and, "Untitled" by Nathan Hilton, and "Equation to Intimacy" by Marie Camille Truscott, both from Cedar Falls.

Admission is free, and the CAC Courtyard is open to the public. Viewing is best in daylight hours. The CAC Courtyard is located on the east side of campus at UNI and is surrounded by the Kamerick Art Building, Strayer-Wood Theatre and the Communication Arts Center. For more information, call (319) 273-3095 or visit www.uni.edu/artdept/gallery.
