CEDAR FALLS, Iowa Vince Gotera, poet and University of Northern Iowa professor in English language and literature, will illustrate how contemporary poems hold vitality and vigor in the new millennium at 7 p.m., Monday, April 3, in the Slife Ballroom, UNI Commons.
Gotera's lecture, Jive and Kickin': The State of Poetry in the Year 2000, will contend that poetry is not a dead art form, but a viable one that the larger culture has not recently valued.
My main message in the lecture is that contemporary poetry has much to offer us in this new millennium beyond scholarly study, Gotera said. There are several movements in poetry today which are enlivening both the writing, the reading and the performance of poetry.
The presentation, held in conjunction with National Poetry Month, will follow with readings by various members of the UNI community. Those reading poems include: Michael Blackwell, director of multicultural education at UNI; Charlotte Brock, staff member at the UNI Physical Plant; Mary Huber, director of the Hearst Center for the Arts; Susan Koch, associate vice-president for academic affairs; UNI President Robert Koob; Chelsea Lechwar, Morton, Ill.; Aaron Podolefsky, UNI provost and vice president for Academic Affairs; and Janet Rives, UNI professor of economics.
During the millennial year, selected members of the UNI faculty are presenting Millennium Lectures, five offered in the spring and five more in the fall. Gotera's address is the fourth in the spring series. All lectures include the presentation of a scholarly paper, and some will include artistic performances and exhibits.
We see the Millennium Lecture Series as a yearlong conversation among those of us who are fortunate enough to experience this historical moment, which comes just once in 20 lifetimes, said Aaron Podolefsky. It is an opportunity to consider our histories, our lives today and our futures as individuals, as members of Iowa families and communities, and as members of the larger human family.
