Reestablishing social work education in Romania to be topic of UNI presentation Thursday, March 28

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- "Women in Peril: Lessons from Romania" will be discussed Thursday, March 28, at the University of Northern Iowa by a Romanian social work educator. Stela Slapac will speak at 7 p.m., in Seerley Hall, Room 115.

The discussion will focus around the repressive policies toward women and their reproductive rights in Romania during the reign of Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. Outcomes of these policies included alarming maternal mortality statistics and state run orphanages for abandoned children. The social work profession and social work education were abolished during the dictator's reign.

Slapac is working to reestablish social work education in Romania. She teaches human rights courses at Pro-Humanitas in Constanta, Romania, and also is a poet.

The presentation is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the American Federation of Teachers, UNI Department of Social Work, UNI Global Health Corps, and the UNI Graduate and Undergraduate Programs in Women's Studies.

For more information contact Annette Lynch, director of the Undergraduate Program in Women's Studies, (319) 273-7195.

Abandoned children in Romania will be topic for UNI presentation Monday, March 25

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The warehousing of orphans in poorly funded and managed state institutions in Romania will be discussed at noon Monday, March 25, in Latham Hall, Room 232 at the University of Northern Iowa.

"Messages from Romania" will be presented by the mother-daughter team of Stela Slapac, a Romanian social work educator, and Alina Slapac, a UNI graduate student in education. It is free and open to the public.

The discussion will focus around the oppressive social, political and economic policies that intersected in Romania during the regime of Nicolae Ceausescu that resulted in the institutionalization of an estimated 150,000 children. This institutionalization has caused an international reaction and call for addressing the needs of these abandoned children.

The presentation is sponsored by the American Federation of Teachers, UNI Department of Social Work, UNI Global Health Corps, and the UNI Graduate and Undergraduate Programs in Women's Studies.
