CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – "Uncle Irene," a female blues band, will perform at the University of Northern Iowa at 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 31, in the Hemisphere Lounge in Maucker Union. The band's performance closes out Women's History Month at UNI.

"Uncle Irene" consists of three members – Rebecca Burkhardt, UNI associate professor of music and musical director of the Northern Iowa Symphony Orchestra; Jana Johns and Jessie Sauer. The band performs songs by blues legends such as Aretha Franklin and Big Mama Thornton, and original songs written by the band. The band has performed as the opening act for "Little Charlie and the Nightcats" and "Smokin' Joe Kubek."

They also have played in selected clubs in the Southwest, and many festivals, including Blues and Arts on the Bay in Oakland, the New Mexico Jazz Workshop, the Women's Solstice Celebration and Project Blue in Durango. The band released its first CD, “No Place Else to Go,” a collection of original and classic songs in 1999.
