Juggling champion to present 'Mathematics of Juggling' Wednesday, March 27, at UNI

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- "The Mathematics of Juggling" will be the topic of the reigning International Juggling Association's ball juggling champion at 3:15 p.m., Wednesday, March 27, in Sabin Hall, Room 102, at the University of Northern Iowa.

Peter Floodstrand Blanchard, visiting scholar in mathematics at the University of Iowa, will discuss mathematical investigations of juggling and provide demonstrations throughout his presentation.

Sponsored by the UNI Department of Mathematics, his presentation is free and open to the public.

"The ancient art of juggling was recently revolutionized by the introduction of a system of notation and an elegant mathematical theory," said Michael Prophet, UNI associate professor of mathematics, who is coordinating Blanchard's visit. "These new ideas led among other things, to the discovery by computer of simple previously unknown juggling patterns that quickly found their way to professional juggling performances worldwide."
