CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Tom Capshew, assistant professor of social work, will present "Taking the Law into Their Own Hands: Civil Remedies for Domestic Violence Victims," the final lecture in the University of Northern Iowa's continuing CROW (Current Research On Women) Forum Series. The event takes place at noon on Monday, April 2, in the Maucker Union Embassy Room.
Capshew will discuss results of a study he conducted to determine if the justice system in this country is truly "blind." In the study, Capshew tracked 628 cases in which victims of domestic violence requested protective orders. "What the study shows is that it sometimes matters which judge handles your case," said Capshew. Some judges were shown to deny or grant protective orders at much higher rates than others, implying that the U.S. justice system is not as equal-handed as it is reputed to be, said Capshew.
The CROW Forum series is sponsored by the UNI graduate program in women's studies. The public may attend at no charge.
