Kick-off Monday, April 1, for 'Arts in April,' UNI's month-long celebration of the arts
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- A "sneak preview" to a month-long cultural celebration on the University of Northern Iowa campus, "Arts in April," will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 1, in the lobby of the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center.
The evening, sponsored by KWWL-TV and open to the public free of charge, will showcase a variety of UNI's performing and visual arts, including music, dance, theatre, works from UNI's permanent art collection and food. The evening will culminate with a performance by blues guitarist Catfish Keith, hosted as a part of KUNI's "Live From Studio One" program at 7 p.m., in a special remote broadcast from the GBPAC's Jebe Hall.
The formal program will begin at 6 p.m., with emcee Chris Carter, KWWL's morning and noon anchor, introducing UNI President Robert Koob for a welcome. The Price Laboratory School Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Michael Fanelli, UNI instructor in teaching, will perform, followed by a short theatre presentation of Valerie Johnson's award-winning entry for the American College Theatre Festival, "An Everyday, Lighthearted, Romantic Comedy." Johnson is a UNI graduate student from Melbourne.
At 6:25 p.m., the UNI Orchesis Dance Company, directed by Ranae Keane-Bamsey, UNI instructor in physical education, will perform. Two School of Music vocal groups will conclude the events in the GBPAC lobby, at 6:40 p.m.-- the UNI Concert Chorale, under the direction of Dyan Baker, UNI visiting artist, and the UNI Singers, directed by Carol Tralau, UNI instructor in music.
In addition, throughout the lobby, there will be exhibits and representatives from many of UNI's departments that will be hosting an Arts in April event or activity.
Building on the success of last year's 125th anniversary celebration, Arts in April is a compilation of events that highlights the many arts and cultural pursuits at UNI. In addition to the performing arts, UNI will host exhibits, lectures, films, family-centered events, observatory programs and special dining opportunities.
"The energy that has gone into this collaborative effort has been tremendous," says Cheryl Gaston, UNI assistant vice president for marketing and public relations. "It's particularly gratifying to see the non-arts related departments design special events and projects for Arts in April. This is integrated marketing at its best."
In all, there will be over 20 departments or organizations collaborating on this year's event, according to Michelle Coleman, who is coordinating the month-long celebration. She said these include several not usually thought of as arts-related "that have creatively designed activities to be a part of Arts in April, thus allowing the festival to become even more inclusive and campus-wide."
Among these areas is Dining Services from UNI's Department of Residence, that will host several special food events throughout the month, and the College of Natural Sciences, that is mounting two photo exhibitions and an exhibition of detailed pencil illustrations from science and nature for display in UNI's Rod Library.
