University of Northern Iowa names recipients of prestigious Presidential scholarships

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — A new class of high school seniors has been named as recipients of Presidential Scholar awards from the University of Northern Iowa, and its members are scheduled to begin their studies on the Cedar Falls campus this fall.

____(Name)____ of ____(Hometown)____ is among the 20 students to receive the four-year, full-ride scholarships. They are funded through the Office of the President at UNI. The awards, which provide free tuition, room and board and mandatory fees for health and computer, are expected to be valued at $7,291 for the 2000-2001 academic year. The scholarship amounts will rise to meet any increases in tuition or housing costs. The students must maintain the academic excellence for which the awards have been granted. He/She will graduate from ___(High School)____ later this spring.

This select group will take part in scholars-only seminars, be eligible for special travel/study opportunities and receive extensive individual advising. All will be required to complete a senior thesis or project.

“It is an honor and challenge to live up to what is expected,” said Timothy Lindquist, chairperson of the Presidential Scholars Board. Lindquist, an associate professor of accounting, went on to say, “The program will help them to meet the challenges of the future. On the job, as an active citizen of their communities or within their families, the Presidential Scholars program will help prepare them to be focused.

“The Presidential Scholars program is made up of a select group of students who know what they want and have pursued it. They have worked hard to receive this award and will work hard to live up to the rigors of the program.”

UNI President Robert Koob said, “The University of Northern Iowa's Presidential Scholars program accords to students of exceptional academic performance the same recognition and financial aid benefits that universities have long accorded to students of exceptional athletic ability. The program represents a deep commitment to academic excellence at this University.”

Members of the Presidential Scholars Board, in addition to Lindquist, are: Gretta Berghammer, professor of theatre; Sarina Chen, associate professor of communication studies; Rex Karsten, assistant professor of management; Kirk Manfredi, associate professor of chemistry; Philip Mauceri, associate professor of political science; Augustine Osman, professor of psychology; Philip Patton, UNI Registrar; and Vickie Robinson, assistant professor of teaching.

Each summer, application invitation letters are sent to students if they are in the top 10 percent of their high school class and scored a 29 or higher on the ACT test. Those in classes consisting of fewer than 50 people must be in the top 5 percent of their class.

Current high school juniors interested in being considered for this award in the fall of 2001 need to be sure their ACT exam scores arrive in the UNI Admissions office no later than the Aug. 1, 2000 deadline.
