UNI students to compete in 7th International Business Case Competition in New Zealand

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- A team of University of Northern Iowa students is one of only seven to qualify for the finals of the 7th International Business Case Competition, to be held at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, March 17-22. This year, 64 universities worldwide were invited to enter the competition, sponsored by the Network of International Business Schools (NIBS), a consortium of internationally active schools of business.

In order to advance to the finals, the participating teams competed in two preliminary rounds during the fall semester. In each round, the teams were given six hours to read, analyze and write their recommendations to a case concerning international business issues. The process is designed to challenge a team's abilities to work under pressure, to interact as a team, determine the problem plaguing the case organization, make a thorough business analysis and, finally, present a sound argument for their recommendations.

For the international competition, instead of written assessments, the team will have only four hours to prepare a case to present orally with PowerPoint slides. They will then have 20 minutes to present their assessment to a panel of judges.

Amnesty International teach-in at UNI to focus on music and revolution

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern chapter of Amnesty International will host a teach-in Wednesday, March 13, at 7 p.m. in Maucker Union Expansion C.

Presenters will be Chris Merz, associate professor of music at UNI; Sonia Yetter, associate professor of modern languages at'UNI; and David Aguiar, a local musician. Each will discuss music and revolution, explaining music’s role in culture.

The goal, according to Mike Tetzloff, Amnesty International co-president at UNI, is to make participants more aware of the world around them. "The more we understand about the ways in which our daily lives are influenced by various factors, the more able we will be to create our ideal lives," he said. "Music has been present in revolutions and cultural changes throughout history and it's important to know how and why it was used."

The public may attend at no charge.
