Story behind Rubin “Hurricane” Carter to be told at the University of Northern Iowa

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — On Tuesday, March 21, the story of Rubin “Hurricane” Carter will be told by two men who were a part of the true-life ordeal that eventually became the basis of the Oscar-nominated film, “The Hurricane,” starring Denzel Washington. The event will be held at 7 p.m. in Maucker Union Expansion. It is open to the public free of charge.

“Eye of the `Hurricane'” will feature John Artist, who was arrested with Carter and was sentenced to life imprisonment for a wrongful murder charge. Artist was offered his freedom after eight years in prison, in return for naming Carter as the murderer. He refused. After 22 years of incarceration, the United States Supreme Court exonerated the two men.

Speaking with Artist will be Lesra Martin. At 15, he purchased the book The 16th Round: From #1 Contender to Prisoner #45472. Written by Carter, the book recounted the events leading up to and following his imprisonment. Martin eventually began to write letters to Carter and visited him in prison. Martin and his family eventually worked to free Carter from prison.

This program is sponsored by the UNI Speakers Committee, and funded by the Northern Iowa Student Government. For more information, contact the UNI Student Activities Office at (319) 273-2683
