CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa Center for Energy and Environmental Education is holding its ninth annual Iowa Energy Poster Contest, open to students in grades one through six. The deadline for entries is March 15.
"The Iowa Energy Poster Contest provides teachers with a means of incorporating energy conservation and renewable energy themes into their classes," said Melisa McBurney of Manson, coordinator for the project.
Posters must be 18 x 24 inches or 12 x 18 inches and in horizontal form. Two winning entries will be selected from each grade and winners will receive a trophy with a picture of their poster and a $100 U.S. Savings Bond.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Approximately 1,300 students from 62 Iowa high schools participated in the 46th Annual Tallcorn Jazz Festival, the nation's oldest competitive high school jazz festival, at the University of Northern Iowa Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16 and 17.
The two-day event, which was held in conjunction with the UNI jazz program's 50th anniversary, featured high school bands that competed in class divisions. Class A, 1A, and 4A competed on Friday, Feb. 16, and Class 2A and 3A competed on Saturday, Feb. 17.
Awards were given to the top three bands in each division. Iowa Association of Jazz Educators certificates were awarded to deserving soloists and sections along with an outstanding soloist award given in each class.
Recipients in Class 4A were: Waterloo West, first; Iowa City West, second; and North Scott (Eldridge), third. Nathanial Gao of Iowa City West received outstanding soloist on alto saxophone. Caleb Shreves of North Scott received runner-up on trumpet/flugelhorn.
Class 3A recipients were: Independence, first; Spirit Lake second; and Centerville, third. Danny Oline of Independence received outstanding soloist on bass. Danny Fitzgibbons of Spirit Lake received runner-up on trumpet. In Class 3A Second Bands, Independence II was first and Mt. Pleasant II was second. Eric Mohlis of Independence II received outstanding soloist on bass.
In Class 2A the recipients were: Hampton-Dumont, first; Okoboji (Milford), second; and North Polk (Alleman), third. Adam Jasperson of East Marshall (LeGrand) received outstanding soloist on trumpet. Andrew Duncan of Okoboji received runner-up on tenor saxophone.
Class 1A recipients were: Woodward-Granger, first; North Mahaska (New Sharon), second; and Lisbon Community, third. Nathan Gross of Woodward-Granger received outstanding soloist on tenor saxophone. Class A recipients were Aurelia, first; Moulton-Udell, second; and Rockwell-Swaledale, third. Mike Nicodemus of Aurelia received outstanding soloist.
