University of Northern Iowa students to explore Easter Island

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa—Students from the University of Northern Iowa will participate in the Earth Science Geology Trip to Rapa Nui, or Easter Island, on a seven day exploration of the island's volcanoes and environment, March 11-17.

Rapa Nui is a volcanic island that has three main volcanoes and several smaller volcanoes. Participants will journey across Rapa Nui on horseback, explore the ancient Rapa Nui port, study the Moai statues and altars, and visit a local museum.

“Rapa Nui is the remotest spot on the Earth,” said Kenneth De Nault, associate professor of earth science, who is leading the trip. “I've been to Easter Island before — it's very ethereal and provocative with an incredibly expressive civilization.”

Students meet once a week for lectures on volcanology as well as cultural aspects about the island. All of the students have assignments they must accomplish before and after the trip, which includes a paper on a specific volcano and another paper on what they saw. They are also learning the Rapa Nui language that is slowly fading from the island, according to De Nault.

Also making the trip will be: Thomas Hockey, UNI professor of astronomy; Alice M. Hoffman, civil engineer, Crownsville, Md.; Wayne I. Anderson, professor of geology and former head of the UNI department of earth science; Jan Anderson, retired elementary school teacher, Cedar Falls; Shirley Cropper, retired adjunct instructor, UNI Department of Earth Science; Lee Potter, alumnus, Phelps Dodge Corporation, Morensi, Ariz.; Betty DeBerg, professor of religion and head of the UNI Department of Philosophy and Religion; Mary Youngquist, clinical psychologist, St. Paul, Minn.; Wendy Fahey, 3rd and 4th grade teacher, Garner School District, Raleigh, N.C.; Mat Fahey, gymnasium manager, Raleigh, N.C.
