CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Drastic changes in men's roles over the past few decades have left men without clear direction for fulfilling their obligations to families and the community, says Allen Hays, director of the University of Northern Iowa's graduate program in Public Policy. Those changes will be explored during "Men, Family and Community," a three-part conference taking place Friday, April 6, at the Five Sullivan Brother's Convention Center in Waterloo. Tavis Smiley, commentator and host on Black Entertainment Network (BET), will be the keynote speaker.
"There's been a shift in men's roles, and sometimes men find themselves in crisis," explained Hays. "Many times, they make up the rules as they go along because they aren't sure what the rules are." Hays says the traditional roles of male as bread-winner and father have been altered over time due to various factors, including economics and racism. "It's time to look at these issues and help men redefine their roles."
The conference is divided into three sections, with the first being the series of workshops. The workshops kick off with an address by Harry Brod, associate professor in UNI's Department of Philosophy and Religion, who has written extensively on men's roles from a feminist perspective. Once the workshops have ended, there will be a Father, Family and Community fair featuring games, entertainment and information from local human services agencies. The final segment of the event is Smiley's keynote at 7:30 p.m. All events take place at the Five Sullivan Brothers Convention Center.
Registration fee is $30 before March 26, and $35 after that date. Cost to attend solely the keynote address is $10. For more information, contact the Public Policy office at UNI, (319) 273-2910, or the YWCA of Black Hawk County, (319) 234-7589.
The conference is sponsored by the UNI Graduate Program in Public Policy, the YWCA, UNI's Center for Multicultural Education, the city of Waterloo, Wartburg College and Hawkeye Community College, with support from AAA Bail Bonds, Community National Bank, Firstar Bank, Iowa Laser, Union Planters Bank, Warren Transport, and Wells Fargo Bank.
