UNI association of office professionals hosts annual workshop Monday, March 12

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa –- The University of Northern Iowa Association of Educational Office Professionals (AEOP) will host its 38th annual workshop, Monday, March 12, at the Curris Buisiness Building on campus. The workshop, "Uncovering Best-Kept Secrets: You and I Emerging in the Workplace," is open to all educational office professionals.

Robin Gurien, training and career development coordinator with UNI Human Resources Services, will provide the keynote address, "Of Best Friends, Unicorns, and Northern Stars: Professional Transformation and Emergence." Gurien will discuss three key factors that will help participants ready themselves for leadership.

Session topics will include using clothing and makeup as part of a personal transformation, led by Lori Clark-Fuller of Dike and Carol Scovill of Winnebago, Minn.; using unique traits to emerge in the office profession, led by Juanita Hahn of Iowa City; and learning shortcuts for Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access, led by Chris Case, a computer trainer and software specialist in Cedar Falls.

A session on raising self-esteem will be led by Karel Murray of Waterloo; and Robert Smith of UNI's Educational Opportunity Center, will discuss financial management.

UNI Speech Team runner-up in South Dakota tournament

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The University of Northern Iowa Individual Events Speech Team placed second at the "Bunny Bop" tournament at South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D., Feb. 24. Several members of the team received individuals awards.

Camille Schulte, senior general communication major from Marengo, placed first in poetry interpretation, and fourth in communication analysis. Carolynn Sween, senior political communication major from Waterloo, placed first in communication analysis and fifth in after dinner speaking. Sween and Megan Gates, freshman general communication major from Waverly, placed fourth in duo interpretation.

Nikki Vap, junior English teaching major from Manchester, and Sween placed first in duo interpretation. Vap also placed first in program oral interpretation and third in communication analysis. Amy Larsen, sophomore undecided major from Ankeny, placed first in impromptu speaking and fifth in persuasive speaking.

Kristi Barry, sophomore elementary education major from Orange City, placed fourth in informative speaking. Sara Gronstal, freshman elementary education major from Council Bluffs, placed third in poetry interpretation and after dinner speaking.

Hip-hop star Nelly to perform at UNI-Dome

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Hip-hop music sensation Nelly will perform at the UNI-Dome on the University of Northern Iowa campus at 8 p.m., Tuesday, April 24. Tickets go on sale at all UNI ticket outlets at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 24. They also are available via the Web at or by calling (319) 273-2683. Tickets are $12 for UNI students and $17 for the public. All seats are general admission.

The performance is presented by Panther Productions, formerly the University Concert Committee, and is funded by the Student Activity Fee Committee and Northern Iowa Student Government. Also appearing will be "Alley Life" and "Bionic Jive."
